As one of Texas’s hottest young touring acts, Aaron Watson has earned his musical stripes the hard way; on the road, traveling thousands of miles to hundreds of honky-tonks across the Southwest and beyond. And for this rising star, the payoff could not have been sweeter than one magical night this past February when he stepped on stage at the legendary Texas Hall of Fame in Bryan, TX, where so many heavyweights had stood before him, to record his latest release. For over 27 years, the Texas Hall of Fame has played host to the likes of Alan Jackson, Chris Ledoux, Gary Allan and many more. Playing before a sell-out crowd of more than 2,000 people, Aaron delivered a scorching performance that marked the culmination of a relentless touring schedule, including more than 500 shows in 11 states over two years. 800 fans were turned away that night as the venue reached capacity, but thankfully, now everyone can share in the excitement of that evening with Aaron Watson’s latest release, Live At The Texas Hall of Fame. Live At The Texas Hall Of Fame is the follow-up to Aaron’s highly successful 2004 release The Honky Tonk Kid, which was produced by Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel and featured Willie Nelson. “I feel like our live show is the foundation on which my career has been built,” says Aaron. “Since it’s such a big part of what we do, it was natural for the next record to be live.” Fans will definitely get their money’s worth from Live At The Texas Hall Of Fame. The album features 19 songs, including ALL of his hits like “Off The Record” and “Reckless,” as well as new material. “I made this album using the same philosophy that I use for my live shows. I always want to give the fans the most music and best show I can for their money, because more likely than not, they had to work hard for it” says Aaron. What’s next? Rest assured that an aggressive touring schedule always tops his list. Still, no matter where he travels or how successful he gets, Aaron always stays true to his roots and the values he had when he started out. Born in Amarillo, TX and raised on country music, Aaron’s first musical influence came from singing old gospel hymns at church. Later, inspiration came from Willie, Waylon, Merle, George, and…George. While attending college at Abilene Christian University and playing baseball, Aaron began to hone his vocal and musical skills, earning his chops on the local honky-tonk circuit and developing a strong local following in the process. It was also during that time that he became serious about songwriting, collaborating often with his close friend Neal Lowry. Aaron has come a long way in a short time. A few years ago, he was traveling to gigs in a rental van with a modest 4-piece band. These days, he owns his own tour bus and shares the stage with 6 ace players in a full-blown band featuring fiddle and steel guitar. His touring base and radio airplay have extended beyond the borders of Texas to include Oklahoma, Louisiana, Wyoming, Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. With nearly 200 shows this year on the schedule, Aaron Watson is sure to play a date near you soon. If you get a chance to see him in action, it won’t be hard to see why The Honky Tonk Kid is blazing such a hot trail across the country. You’ll also be glad that when you’re left wanting more, you can simply get in your car, turn on your stereo, and pop in a copy of Aaron Watson’s new CD Live At The Texas Hall of Fame.

The English Beat

Similar Artists: The Selecter | The Specials | The Beat | General Public | Madness

The Beat, known in the United States as The English Beat in order to avoid confusion with Paul Collins' band of the same name, was a popular Two Tone ska and pop music group. Formed in the English city of Birmingham in 1978, The Beat disbanded in 1983, but has reformed in the early 2000s with some of the original line-up. One of the more popular and enduring groups of a short-lived trend, The Beat released three albums: "I Just Can't Stop It" (1980), "Wha'ppen" (1981) and "Special Beat Service" (1982), and a string of excellent singles including "Mirror in the Bathroom", the politically-charged "Stand Down Margaret" (which refers to controversial British PM Margaret Thatcher), "Save It For Later" and "I Confess". Although the group's main fan-base was in the UK, they were also popular in Australia thanks to regular exposure on the government-owned rock radio station Triple J and the nationally-broadcast TV pop show Countdown. They had a sizeable following in the U.S., and a strong presence on that country's college radio. After the break-up of The Beat, Dave Wakeling (guitar, lead vocals) and Ranking Roger (vocals) went on to form General Public, while Andy Cox (guitar) and David Steele (bass guitar) formed Fine Young Cannnibals with vocalist Roland Gift. Members of the band often collaborated on stage with The Specials and performed together on tracks such as "Free Nelson Mandela". In the early 1990s, Roger joined members of The Specials to form the new band The Special Beat, which released two live albums. Ranking Roger's son, Ranking Junior, has followed in his father's footsteps. In 2005, he appeared on The Ordinary Boys' single "Boys Will Be Boys". In 2003, The Beat's original line-up, minus Cox and Steele but with the addition of Junior, played a sold-out one-off gig at the Royal Festival Hall. As of 2005, The Beat has reformed, counting Roger, Blockhead and Morton of the original line-up, with Ranking Junior also on vocals. The band is said to have the blessing of Cox, Steele and Saxa (of Desmond Dekker fame). The Beat's lead singer Dave Wakeling also continues to tour as The English Beat, as he has done for the last three decades, with an amazing all-star ska backing band playing the hits of The English Beat, General Public, and his new songs.

If it’s true what they say, that parenthood teaches some of the most profound lessons in patience and humility, this could partly explain the professional maturation that singer-songwriter Wade Bowen has experienced over the last couple of years. Settled nicely into his new role of father and family man, Wade Bowen has learned that both in the music process and in life, it’s hard to rush a good thing. Thankfully while recording his February 2006 release, Lost Hotel, Wade Bowen had time to push a step further and truly come into his own, resulting in his most depth-reaching, acclaimed effort yet. Today, he’s already a familiar and awarded name in music, performing along the active touring highways of Texas and the Southwest and selling out top venues like the legendary Gruene Hall in New Braunfels. Carving out a dedicated fan base with his magnetic appeal and proven abilities, Wade Bowen has enjoyed a 7 year stint as a leader amongst a flourishing Americana and Alt-Country music community. Bowen helped establish West 84, the initial grouping that toured throughout Texas in the wake of the young songwriter’s quality originals and captivating vocal abilities. The magnetic singer-songwriter was naturally spurred to center spotlight and eventually the name West 84 was retired for the more apt, Wade Bowen. The intensifying energy both onstage and in the audience ushered in Bowen’s first live effort in 2003, The Blue Light Live, which parked on the LoneStarMusic.com Top 25 best-sellers list for an impressive 2 and a half years, most of that spent in the Top Ten list. The Blue Light Live won 2004 Album of the Year honors from MyTexasMusic.com, was nominated for Live Album of the Year by GruenewithEnvy.com, and spotlighted Bowen as the 2004 Male Vocalist of the Year by MyTexasMusic.com as well. Bowen is passionate about being a genre-crossing artist, learning from a variety of musical styles. Bowen’s influences have melded to form a well-rounded songwriter, familiar with shaping melodies to evoke emotion, and boosted by a layered vocal intensity that shines. Almost four years since his last studio album, Lost Hotel was released on Sustain Records in 2006 and was the first opportunity Bowen had in the studio where he felt free from the typical time and studio challenges. Giving Bowen ample time to examine old wounds and dig deeper in his songwriting, the album reflects themes of struggle and loss as well as hopeful perseverance and new beginnings.Enjoying a continuously growing horizon, Bowen and cohorts are stretching their legs across the nation, touring regularly in the Midwest and Southeast, in addition to heavy performing spanning the Southwest. With a personality that has been described as unabashedly straightforward and honest, his raw approach simply transcends to his craft and makes audiences feel more like friends, lucky enough to witness the next gifted performer as he rises out of Texas.

Josh Abbott, a great fan of music as long as he can remember, has come into his own at the tender age of 27 with his first full-length release of “Scapegoat”. Formed in early 2006, JAB was founded by fraternity brothers: Josh Abbott, Austin Davis, Drew Hurt, and Neel Huey. After playing mostly acoustic open mic night shows at The Blue Light, Josh and Austin called on Drew and Neel to give the band a rhythm section. On their debut night, The Blue Light packed in a full house and a sense of something special was present! After a year of picking up local shows and Greek parties, the band released a self-titled LP in 2007 featuring four tracks. Eventually, the band began to pick up road shows, and were invited to play the Zieg-Fest after-party at Lake Bryan. JAB knew they were starting to arrive when some of Texas country's most popular artists came to party and watch them, including: Eli Young Band, Roger Creager, Rich O'Toole, Kyle Bennett Band, and Brady Black of Randy Rogers Band.
With the help of Drew Womack, who sang harmonies and co-produced the vocals on his new record, Austin Davis, who slams down an entirely new sound with his electric banjo leads, Preston Wait, who throws around dueling fiddles and killer lead guitar riffs, a punctual rhythm section spear headed by Daniel “Dova” Almodova on Bass and Edward V on drums and some sultry harmonies from CMT host and Nashville Recording Artist Charla Corn, Josh has produced a record that will not be ignored this fall. Josh Abbott may propel into Texas hearts and minds far before his time. From Lubbock to Houston to Amarillo to Austin, the Josh Abbott Band is making themselves known and catching on fast! Whether it’s the powerful ranging vocals, catchy lyrics that hook, or unique sound of an electric banjo, JAB is making their mark quickly. Look for their record “Scapegoat” at Hasting and your favorite mom and pop record store as well as I-tunes, Lone Star music, and more to come.

The 71's
Rock n Roll music...that brings you to life. The 71's sound redefines what it means to have an anthem, reinvents what it means to love a song, and resurrects the youth inside of you. Sounding somewhere between Jet and U2, The 71's are like everything you've ever loved, and like nothing you've ever heard! What if music was more than just tunes to hum to? What if it changed the way you looked at God, looked at life, or even the way you saw yourself? What would that look like? Michael Coffman (Lead vocals) and Ryan Cecil (Lead guitar) asked themselves these same questions. Together with the Lisenbe brothers, Jacob (Bass guitar) & "Tank" (Drums), their answer was The 71's - a band addicted to the influence of music, and dedicated to being a part of it. The 71's believe that rock n' roll really can change the world - some say this makes them naive. They would say it's what makes them worth listening to... YOU DECIDE.

The band prides itself on its experienced musicianship and the ability to play as well live as they do in the their recordings. They Were Stars formed in late 2006 in Dallas, Texas, only to record a few demo tracks then take a year-long hiatus. Collin Cable (vocals) and Graham Smith (bass) reunited in early 2008 to continue the project and recruited guitarist Taylor Tatsch and drummer Cooper Heffley. They quickly began working on a six-song EP but found it hard to stop there. The band soon had enough material to extend the EP into a full-length album, Own Your Atoms, which they released in April of 2009. The band wrote, produced, engineered, and mixed the entire album themselves. Around the time of the release, they brought in guitarist Mitch Lazorko to complete the group. They Were Stars has recently opened for bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, Vedera, and Pictures and Sound. As of May 2009, they are writing new music and playing shows around North Texas

Killswitch Engage

Similar Artists: All That Remains | As I Lay Dying | Trivium | Parkway Drive | Atreyu

Killswitch Engage is a metalcore band from Westfield, Massachusetts, United States. Their sound mixes crushing riffs, double bass drum patterns, furious screaming-growling vocals and a dash of melodic elements. Their music is heavily influenced by the hardcore music scene. A key feature of the band's sound is the use of complex palm muting, single-note and power chord riffs featuring dual-guitar harmonies, often punctuated with pinch harmonic squeals. Following the demise of his band Overcast in 1998, bassist Mike D'Antonio trawled the underground Massachusetts hardcore and heavy metal scene in search of a line-up for a new band. In 1999, D'Antonio met Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel, Aftershock's guitarists. Dutkiewicz became the drummer, while Stroetzel remained on guitar. The trio searched for a vocalist and eventually hired Jesse Leach, formerly of Corrin and Nothing Stays Gold. The now four member band took the name of "Killswitch Engage", a name proposed by D'Antonio after watching an episode of the FOX television program "The X-Files" entitled "Kill Switch" by writer William Gibson after meeting Seattle industrial band Kill Switch...Klick. While on tour with In Flames, the record label Ferret took notice of Killswitch Engage's aggressive live show. The band then signed with the record label and began recording their debut album. This their debut Self-Titled album was sufficient to earn the band a record deal with Roadrunner Records. Soon after their signing to Roadrunner records, the band decided to become a five piece by bringing in former Aftershock drummer, Tom Gomes, whilst guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz formed the now guitar duo. In 2002 they released "Alive or Just Breathing", a successful record which greatly increased the band's exposure and placed them on the Billboard Magazine Heatseeker chart. The CMJ New Music Report described the record as "more addictive than crack cocaine that's been smothered in nicotine AND drenched with chocolate." Leach left the band in 2002 for personal resons and was replaced by Howard Jones of Blood Has Been Shed on vocals. Leach went on to form the band, Seamless. The new lineup played on the Road Rage tour in the UK and Netherlands in 2002 with 36 Crazyfists and Five Pointe 0, and continued touring throughout the rest of the year. In 2003 the band released the song "When Darkness Falls" which appeared on the soundtrack to the 2003 horror film "Freddy Vs. Jason". The same year they also played the Ozzfest, after which drummer Tom Gomes left the band to live in Los Angeles with his wife and pursue their current band, Something Of A Silhouette. He was replaced by Jones' fellow Blood Has Been Shed band member, Justin Foley, who also played in the jazzmetal band Red Tide. Justin' first tour with the band was the MTV2 Headbangers Ball tours. The band's third album, and the first to feature Jones on vocals, was "The End of Heartache" which was released on May 11 2004. The album ultimately went on to sell more than a quarter of a million copies in the U.S. It also debuted on the top 40 of the Australian album charts on May 17, 2004 following a successful tour of that country with Anthrax. In the later half of 2004, the band supported Slayer on their US Jagermusic dates, and headlined shows with From Autumn to Ashes, 18 Visions and 36 Crazyfists. In addition, the track "The End of Heartache" became the main single for the movie "Resident Evil: Apocalypse", and in December 2004 the song was nominated in the 'Best Metal Performance' category for the 47th annual Grammy Awards. In late 2004, "The End of Heartache" was re-released as a special edition album, with a second disc featuring live performances of "Fixation on the Darkness", "Life to Lifeless" and "My Last Serenade" accompanied with two bonus tracks, the rerecorded "Irreversal", featuring former vocalist Jesse Leach on chorus vocals, and "My Life For Yours[track]", the Japanese bonus track for the original release. During the summer of 2005, the band returned for another spot on the Ozzfest tour. On November 1, 2005, "Alive or Just Breathing" was re-released as part of Roadrunner Records' 25th anniversary. It was re-released with a second disc that contains "[track artist=Killswitch Engage]In The Unblind", "When the Balance is Broken", Numbered Days (Demo Version)", "Transfiguration (Demo Version of 'Fixation on the Darkness')", Just Barely Breathing (Demo Version)", "Fixation On The Darkness (With Howard Jones On Vocals)", and  "Aojb Studio Out Takes", as well as the music videos for "My Last Serenade", "Fixation on the Darkness", and "Life to Lifeless". On November 22, 2005, KsE released a live DVD titled "(Set This) World Ablaze" which had a live concert the band taped during their stop at the Palladium in Worcester, MA on July 25 2005. In addition to the live performance, the DVD also features an hourlong documentary about the band and all of their music videos. As I Lay Dying and Once Beloved also performed at this sold out concert. The band returned to Chicopee, Massachusetts on February 19, 2005, to play an unnanounced show in front of fans from the band's beginning days. The show was an album release party for guitarist Joel's brother's band, Once Beloved. On the March 3, 2006 edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown!, Superstar Randy Orton came out to new entrance music performed by the band, titled "This Fire". The theme will be featured in the upcoming WWE Reckless Intent" album. The song is now used on a very regular basis by wrestler CM Punk. Their latest album, As Daylight Dies" was released on November 21st, 2006.The style is very similar to "The End of Heartache", with more melodic rythms and soul crunching double bass. "As Daylight Dies" is their most addictive release to date. Kicked off by the cover of Dio's "Holy Diver" the CD took off as a cult favorite. Other titles such as "My Curse" have been featured on video games such as "Burnout: Paradise City" and "Guitar Hero III" and features Howard Jones' heart pounding verses and melodic chorus and one of the metal riffs to date. Other songs that shine are "This Is Absolution" and "For You".

The Devil Wears Prada is a christian metalcore band formed in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio, United States. They were formerly signed to Rise Records, but are currently signed to Ferret Records. The band has amassed a large underground following on PureVolume and MySpace. Although the band's inspiration for their name was from Lauren Weisberger's novel, The Devil Wears Prada, lead-singer Mike Hranica states this in the band's blog (www.myspace.com/tdwp): "It's the same concept as our lyrics, 'emeralds hold no hope', and many many others. What we believe it to mean is that possessions don't matter at all and someday everyone will realize that this is true. When standing before God, He won't care about your sweet Prada scarf or Gucci shoes or whatever. It's a Christian reasoning for the name, we didn't name it to attempt at being fashionable or whatever." During a recent interview with East Coast Romper, the band has claimed Underoath and Still Remains as their major influences. The Devil Wears Prada's new album, titled "Plagues", was released on August 21, 2007. A demo song called "Hey John, What's Your Name Again?" was placed on MySpace on July 1, 2007. This song was later to be released as a single and it's video debuted on MTV2 November 2nd, 2007. As of January 2009, The Devil Wears Prada announced that they had started work on the follow up album for 'Plagues'. They have said that this album 'could quite possibly be the heaviest TDWP yet.' During their 2008 tour, The Devil Wears Prada began playing "I Hate Buffering" to live audiences. Vocalist Mike Hranica said, "We're really excited for this album. It's definitely going to be darker, heavier, and more epic. Expect a much heavier, more metal record." Drummer Daniel Williams states that the new album will be wilder and crazier containing parts that repeat, like choruses, and James Baney says that the new album will be more mechanical, but still containing their same distinct style. With Roots Above and Branches Below entails a more aggressive and steady vocal style than in the two previous albums. On their "Sweet Brag Tour," the band offered a download card for the songs "Dez Moines" and "Assistant to the Regional Manager". On May 5/2009 the band's third album entitled "With Roots Above And Branches Below" was released. It peaked at #11 on the US Billboard Top 200 with 31,000 records sold in the first week, and #1 on the Top Christian, Hard Rock and Independent albums charts. The Devil Wears Prada is: Mike Hranica – lead vocals Jeremy DePoyster – guitar/vocals James Baney – keys/synth Chris Rubey – guitar Andy Trick – bass Daniel Williams – drums

In 1993, Anders Fridén, the original lead vocalist, left the band to join In Flames. Mikael Stanne, formerly playing rhythm guitar became the vocalist, with Fredrik Johansson taking over the guitars. Mikael also recorded vocals with In Flames. However, contrary to popular belief, he was never a full member of that band; he was a session vocalist and sang to help out the members of In Flames. In 1998, before the release of the album Projector, Johannson left the band. Keyboardist Martin Brändström and bassist Michael Nicklasson were added to the line-up, and Martin Henriksson switched to the guitar. This album was nominated for a Swedish Grammy Award. Their next albums were Haven (2000), Damage Done (2002), Character (2005) and Fiction (2007). Dark Tranquillity is known to be a pioneer of the Gothenburg Metal sound alongside bands such as At the Gates and In Flames. Anders Jivarp has been the drummer since the band was formed.

Heartless Bastards

Fat Possum Records is excited to announce that the Heartless Bastards are set to release their third record on February 3rd, 2009. The record is called The Mountain and was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead, Patty Griffin). The Mountain delivers the swamped-up rock howl that fans have come to love from the critically acclaimed Heartless Bastards, but it also weaves in an adventurous sonic evolution, expanding their three-piece rock palate by adding pedal steel, mandolin, banjo and strings, all in support of Erika Wennerstrom's transcendent voice that Rolling Stone once described as "channeling all the swagger and spit of a young Robert Plant."In October 2007, Wennerstrom packed her bags and moved to Austin, TX, to write her new record, and work with producer McCarthy. In true ascetic discipline, she rented a meager apartment, locked herself inside, wrote for six months straight and came out with 11 songs that represent the evolution critics and fans have been anticipating for years. Once the album was finished, she immediately got to work on assembling a new band, searching for musicians who would help take her live show to a whole new level. After weeks of auditions, a serendipitous alignment of stars occurred, and she found what she was looking for. The two new members aren't Texas ringers, but fellow Dayton brethren Dave Colvin on drums, and Jesse Ebaugh on bass, who actually played on the original demo that hooked Fat Possum in the first place. The line up this fall will also include Bill Elm on lap steel, and occasionally Zy O.Lynnon violin. The new and improved Heartless Bastards are sure to leave fans reeling and wanting more.  www.myspace.com/heartlessbastards

Tegan Quin and Sara Quin (born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on September 19, 1980) are identical and Canadian s, performing as Tegan and Sara. They initially played as Plunk in 1995, and lacked a drummer and bass player. In 1997, they used their school’s recording studio to record two demo albums: "Who's in Your Band?" and "Play Day". In 1998, they made an early breakthrough by winning Garage Warz Battle of the Bands, a local music competition in Calgary. Since then, the two have toured with Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, Kaki King, The Pretenders, Ben Folds, The Killers, Rachael Cantu, Vivek Shraya, Cake, Gogol Bordello, Hot Hot Heat, Ryan Adams, Veda Hille, Little Birdy, Iron On, Little Brazil, Bryan Adams, and Weezer, and they performed a show at Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair. They are signed to Neil Young's Vapor Records in Canada, and to Sire in the United States as their previous label, Sanctuary Records, is no longer releasing new music in the United States. Currently, Tegan lives in Vancouver, British Columbia and Sara lives in Montreal, Quebec. When they were competing in Garage Warz, they were known as "Sara and Tegan" because that is how their mother registered them on the competition forms. Their first album, Under Feet Like Ours, was initially released under the name "Sara and Tegan". While both are similarly involved in vocals and playing instruments, the singing of the lead melody usually goes to whichever twin wrote the particular song. The two hardly sang together in the recordings of their early records, but they started to more on their later records and of course do when live. On their 2004 album, "So Jealous", the two lend their unusual voices and simple guitar riffs to power pop ballads about love and emotional, haunting songs such as Walking With a Ghost. The are notorious for their live act, which includes sisterly banter, tales from growing up in and surviving teenhood, and a quirky sense of humor. Their album, "The Con", released July 24, 2007, is a definite evolution of their previous sound and their strongest yet, the twins toured the album for over a year and a half. The twins are currently in the process of making their sixth studio album titled Sainthood to be released in October 2009.

Dropkick Murphys are a celtic punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, United States in 1996. First playing together in the basement of a friend's barbershop, the band has made a name for itself for their relentless touring, as well as their annual St. Patrick's Day weekend shows in Boston. The subjects of their songs often deal with the working class environment in which they grew up. The band put out a series of EPs and were signed by Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong's label Hellcat Records. In 1998, they released their first full length album, Do or Die. Lead singer Mike McColgan left the band later that year and was replaced by The Bruisers lead singer Al Barr. In 1999, they released their follow-up album,The Gang's All Here. In 2001 they released their third album, Sing Loud, Sing Proud. The album showcased their developing sound, and included collaborations with The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan and Cock Sparrer's Colin McFaull. It also marked a significant lineup change for the band. Original guitarist Rick Barton was replaced by former The Ducky Boys guitarist James Lynch and Marc Orrell, and additional instruments were added and played by new members Ryan Foltz and Spicy McHaggis. Their next album, Blackout, was released in 2003. The new album included the radio hit "Walk Away," as well as the songs "Fields of Athenry" & "The Dirty Glass". The latter of which features female vocals from Stephanie Dougherty (Deadly Sins) Around the same time, the band released a re-working of the Boston Red Sox anthem, Tessie, which then became the official song of the team's 2004 World Series run. "Tessie" was also used throughout the major motion picture Fever Pitch and was included on the EA Sports MVP Baseball 2005 soundtrack. In 2005, the Dropkick Murphys released Singles Collection Volume 2, featuring covers, b-sides, and other material that didn't make it onto previous albums, and the band contributed a recording of "We Got the Power" to Rock Against Bush Volume 2. Their fifth studio album, The Warrior's Code, was released on June 21, 2005. It features the singles "Sunshine Highway," "The Walking Dead," "The Warrior's Code," as well as the bonus track "Tessie". It also includes a song that was inspired by a Woody Guthrie poem, which they named "I'm Shipping Up to Boston." The song was featured in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed (Scorsese mentioned the band in an interview after he won his first Oscar). The Dropkick Murphys released their sixth studio album, The Meanest of Times, on September 18, 2007. This is their first release not on Hellcat Records, but instead on Born & Bred. In early 2008, Marc Orrell left the band. Tim Brennan, who has been playing mandolin, accordion, banjo, tin whistle and guitar for the band since 2004, replaced him on leadguitar. Tim's duties were taken over by Jeff DaRosa, former member of The Vigilante and Pinkerton Thugs.

Portugal. The Man is an experimental indie rock four-piece centered around frontman John Baldwin Gourley's abstract musical approach and corresponding upbringing. He was raised in a sort of technological isolation: his log cabin home in the winter wasteland of the fringes of Wasilla, Alaska was powered by a generator and had no telephone. Both of his parents helped completely immerse him in the unique lifestyle that comes with a land of seasonal darkness and perpetual cold with their jobs as dog sled mushers. Gourley's innate curiosity and individual spirit combined with a fascination with science fiction and experiences of homelessness create a distinctly transcendent sound that is always open to interpretation and change. The band formed in 2003 with the union of Gourley (vocals, guitar, organ, machines) and his childhood friend Zachary Scott Carothers (Bass, percussion, vocals) after the break-up of their band Anatomy of a Ghost. Jason Sechrist (Drums and Gang) of Portland, OR joined in 2005. Current lineup includes Ryan Neighbors (Piano, Rhodes, Organ, Synth, Vocals). They are however known for fluidity in both their music and their lineup and often feature guest appearances. The band's debut album, Waiter: "You Vultures!" was released by Fearless Records on January 24th, 2006. On June 22, 2007 they released their second full length, Church Mouth. The band then set out on a full US tour with support from The Photo Atlas, Play Radio Play, Tera Melos, and The Only Children. They then toured Europe, and followed it up with another US headlining tour with support from Rocky Votolato and Great Depression during September and October. Following this tour, they joined Thursday on a short east coast tour in November alongside Circle Takes the Square. Portugal. The Man collaborated with the band The Sound of Animals Fighting on the re-release of their first album, "Tiger and the Duke." Portugal. The Man remixed three of the songs on that album. On July 30, 2008, it was announced that Portugal. The Man would release Censored Colors under its independent record label, Approaching AIRballoons, with a partnership with EQUAL VISION RECORDS. The album was released September 16, 2008. On April 9th, 2009, Portugal. The Man announced a fourth studio album, The Satanic Satanist. It was released on July 21, 2009. As of October 2009, It was announced through Twitter that Portugal. The Man have completed another album entitled "American Ghetto". "We're from a small town in South Carolina called Possum Kingdom," NEEDTOBREATHE frontman Bear Rinehart explains when asked about the place he and his younger brother/co-writer Bo were raised. "Trust me - there was absolutely no music scene there." And, though he makes light of it, the relative isolation that came with growing up in such an environment must have played some part in fostering the independent-minded approach the Rinehart boys would later bring to their band. In this way, it makes perfect sense that NEEDTOBREATHE's third album is called The Outsiders' and listening to the anthemic title track that opens the 14-song collection, it's clear that they embrace this label as both a badge of honor and a battle cry. The sons of an Assembly of God pastor, Bear and Bo Rinehart had inherited their father's gift with words, and put it to good use in their songwriting; their mother taught piano, making music a constant part of their young lives. Formed in 1999, NEEDTOBREATHE (with childhood friends Joe Stillwell and Seth Bolt) built an impressive regional following, playing throughout the Southeast. Along the way, they sold more than 15,000 copies of their self-released EP's, recorded by Seth, who had earned a degree in record engineering. 2006 saw the release of the band's major label debut, Daylight, and a relentless, national touring schedule. Despite being on the road nearly non-stop, NEEDTOBREATHE returned the following year with The Heat, which went to #2 on the Heatseekers chart and spawned the hit single "More Time," a top 10 success at Triple-A radio (sitting alongside established artists like Coldplay and Jack Johnson). The group's penchant for capturing a poignant moment or eliciting an emotion with their music is evidenced by the numerous songs from each of their albums that have appeared in film and television, including the Hilary Swank-starring, motion picture P.S. I Love You and MTV's "The Hills," among many others. On their latest album, The Outsiders, NEEDTOBREATHE has truly come into their own, seamlessly blending ambient, arena-ready soundscapes with a decidedly Southern sensibility. "The 'Southern thing' is very scary to some people," Bear laughs. "But for us, it's not so much a sound than a feeling. It's just about having some soul in the words you write, the music that you play. And it's something that just comes naturally to us." It might also be that "Southern thing" that lends a soulful warmth to Bear's distinct voice, providing the perfect foil to each song. From the soaring majesty of "Something Beautiful" to the philosophically minded ballad "These Hard Times," his vocals are emotive yet honest, making the words he's singing all the more powerful and moving. "Stones Under Rushing Water" (featuring Sara Watkins of the Grammy award winning group Nickel Creek) is achingly beautiful, both musically and, perhaps even more so, lyrically. "My favorite love songs are the ones that say things in the simplest terms," Bear relates. "When you think of a song like [Percy Sledge's] 'When a Man Loves a Woman,' the words just don't get much plainer. But the emotional impact is overwhelming." Then there's the blues-inflected rocker "Prisoner" with its searing guitar solo - a first for the band ("It's about as 'Smoke On The Water' as NEEDTOBREATHE gets," Bear jokes). The alt-rock edge of "Hurricane" is countered by the back-porch ease of "Won't Turn Back" and the gospel feel of "Lay 'Em Down." The Peter Gabriel-esque anthem "Through Smoke" (inspired by a toy organ the group bought at a thrift store) and the orchestrally driven "Garden," build on the album's wide range of sounds. "We've never said we can't do something because it sounds a little country or too modern rock, because then we wouldn't be staying true to our ourselves," Bo elaborates. And while they defy any restrictions to the style of music they play, NEEDTOBREATHE has a very clear idea of how they want their songs to sound. "Over the past two albums, we've learned that you can't look to a producer to make you great, that the magic has to come from within the band," Bear explains. "Instead, we wanted to work with collaborators that would bring a fresh perspective and, on the practical side, a particular expertise to the table." To that end, the band deliberately chose to co-produce The Outsiders with three different producers with recording sessions taking place in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Charleston. "Jim Scott is an old school guy who's produced some of our favorite records. I mean, he worked on Tom Petty's Wildflowers? Wilco was leaving the studio when we were going in," Bear enthuses. "He doesn't use any Pro-Tools at all so it really challenged us as a band. Instead, he's got a bunch of old, vintage equipment that he uses it in a really cool way. Above all, we just really felt connected to him." A former jazz guitar teacher, Rick Beato (Shinedown, Jump Little Children) comes from what Bear calls, "a virtuoso standpoint. We knew from working with him on The Heat that he's such a talented musician, both creatively and technically. We really came to him as our problem solver." The third co-producer, John Alagia, worked with the likes of Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer - "Artists that were known as live artists," Bear continues. "Every band that's worth their salt live is trying to capture something in the studio that represents the magic that happens when they play together on stage. John helped us do that." And it is truly magic when the four members of NEEDTOBREATHE take the stage. The band has honed their live show the old-fashioned way - putting in the time, spending years on the road. Aside from their skillful musicianship, there's a spontaneous energy that intangibly connects them with their audience, and their powerful performances have helped build a dedicated fan base that's been clamoring for The Outsiders. "We've seen over the years that our fans consider NEEDTOBREATHE to be a whole experience," explains Bo. "Having a hit single is great and everything, but the only relationship a fan has with most bands like that is the three minutes they hear on the radio. We've always wanted something deeper than that." "I feel like people who listen to our band have come to be fans of our albums, which has been really rewarding," Bear agrees. "I think NEEDTOBREATHE is bigger than any one song and that's something we've always worked toward." Without a doubt, NEEDTOBREATHE are extremely proud of The Outsiders and can't wait to see what will unfold for the band next. "This band is our life - it's everything, really the only thing, that we've done for the last 10 years," Bear continues, explaining that the band literally poured everything they had into The Outsiders. "We know this is the best record we've ever made."

Blaze

The streets ain't easy. Fear can crawl in no matter what your skin color or your zip code is. The sound of gunshots outside your home will get you, change you, compel you. It makes you want to scream, it helps you find a voice. It's the kind of life you must embrace or forsake. This is where Blaze comes in.

There are many chapters to his career, and all you have to do is choose one to find out what makes him the only Blaze who matters!

Hip-hop is the voice of a unique people, and Blaze is distinct within hip-hop. He's got the skills and the sound to rep with the best, and an individual voice to match his image. Here's a guy who watches horror flicks, and finds himself rooting for the lunatics. As a kid reading comics, he wanted the villains to win. It's the frustrated character of the streets, given form in the character of Blaze. But he's never one-dimensional, it's his very ruthlessness that keeps him from holding back.

He's not just a gangster, he's not just a persona, he's a real guy who's been driven to these things, a perceptive, sensitive individual who chooses to wear facepaint and rap the Wicked Shit. He's not afraid to tell you why he does it, and how he got there. The best way to discover Blaze is through his music, but here's the story as we know it:

Blaze started rapping when he was just 17. He was still in high school, and still a young punk known as Chris Rouleau, when he started spittin' rhymes for his friends. Before long he was jumpin' in and puttin' it down at local shows in the streets of "Clemtown" on Detroit's East Side, where his skills and style earned him a reputation.

Chris grew up on the typical Detroit Rock City bands: KISS, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, even Journey and J. Geils, but he was also drawn to the rap acts he would come to emulate: Slick Rick, LL Cool J, Run DMC, and particularly the thug styling of NWA and Ice-T. He was driven to be involved with the music he loved, and started rapping locally as "Sandman."

His first big show was at the Ritz in Roseville, where he opened for the House of Krazees, alongside his friend Jaime Lowery. Ironically, House of Krazees would go on to become his future label-mates Twiztid, and Jaime would become ABK, Blaze's future partner in Drive-By. He struck up a friendship with those guys, which he maintains to this day.

During this time he tried many partnerships and joined several groups, including one known as Sleepwalkers. The Sleepwalkers album was produced by The R.O.C.(of House of Krazees), and was one of many that never came out or never made it (though Chris remembers a kid named Eminem hanging around the studio, learning a thing or two). Chris was ready to give up rapping, when his old friends told him they were joining a label called Psychopathic Records, and encouraged him to come along...

Chris started off at Psychopathic as a road dog. He clocked in just like every other employee, and helped out around the office and on the road. He headed street teams while promoting the Insane Clown Posse album "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers." He was alongside ICP with the road crew for their devastating performance at Woodstock '99. The next year he helped his old House of Krazees homies, now known as Twiztid, push their "Freek Show" album. Twiztid had him guest star on their "Mostasteless" album, and he would occasionally jump in as a hype man and help out on stage. The word began to spread around Psychopathic that the guy could rap.

Violent J of ICP took notice, and soon Chris was asked to join the Psychopathic Rydas supergroup as "Cell Block." The Rydas were a hit among fans of Psychopathic Records, or "Juggalos," and soon Chris was offered a chance to record his own album. Together with Violent J, Chris came up with the name "Blaze Ya Dead Homie," and recorded a self-titled solo EP. After his previous bad luck recording albums, Chris put all he could into this first release with Psychopathic Records. He drew on all his experiences to that point and focused them into the Blaze persona: a gang-banger killed in a drive-by shooting and mysteriously resurrected from the dead.

As Blaze Ya Dead Homie he could express a love of the supernatural, alongside his history with the 'hood and affinity for gangster rap. It also echoed his "return from the dead" after giving up rapping and working on the road. The resulting blend of theatrics and gritty realism was what Blaze considers his most "real" album. Blaze was born, and he fit in tight with the roster at Psychopathic Records.

AftonLive Showcase

Afton offers artists hope for finding greater satisfaction and fulfillment in their creative work. We provide this through live performance opportunities and online informational resources. In an industry full of people anxious to tell you that you can't, we're lucky to be able to tell you that you can.

By providing an opportunity for live shows, Afton offers a primary vehicle for artists to share what they have created. Aditionally, we provide unique strategies for artists and advocate a proactive mindset. We encourage them to determine the purpose of their art, establish their definition of success, and then create the plan that will get them there. This missing framework is the only thing keeping many artists from having the career they want.

Afton's events allow an artist's music to come to life. Live performance is where the deepest connection between the fan and artist can take place. Also, at the local level, live shows are the best way to gain new fans. Our shows offer artists hope for growing their following, which is a very common career goal.

Xiu Xiu (pronounced "shew shew") is an experimental band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film Tian yu (a.k.a. Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl). Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Past members include Cory McCulloch, Lauren Andrews and Yvonne Chen. Stewart's cousin, Caralee McElroy joined the band in 2003 and was the only other permanent member of the band until her departure in early 2009. Otenki

Formed in the summer of 2004, Otenki was formed by Enoma Asowata, Fausto Padilla, German Hernandez and Josh Tenorio. From the very beginning Otenki was determined to stand out amongst their peers. "We did everything we could to reach people. We played acoustically at bigger shows, we passed out flyers, wedding crashed, and held parties to help create our community. We didn't just want fairweather fans. We wanted friends who wanted to make our dream part of their dream." states vocalist German Hernandez. It is this connection that helped them play the 2005, 2006, and 2009 Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour(sharing a stage with Deftones, The Used, Killswitch Engage, My Chemical Romance, Thrice) as well as play the 2005 and 2009 Vans Warped Tour.Otenki worked with record producer Paul Leavitt(All Time Low, Versa Emerge, Mercy Mercedes, Conditions, Circa Survive, Senses Fail) for their current effort "Making Sense of Static". The album has garnered attention from Alternative Press Magazine, Purevolume.com, Thedailychorus.com, ROCK ONE (French Music and Pop Culture Magazine) and the premier music site Absolutepunk.net.After experiencing some line up changes keyboardist Colton Majors and drummer Crew Ginn helped solidify the line up in 2009; their skill and passion were exactly the ideal qualities the original members were seeking. The band is currently in pre production for their next album. James Paul Wisner (Paramore, underOATH, The Academy Is, There For Tomorrow) has been selected to helm this project. The new record will feature soaring vocal melodies, pulsating beats, ripping guitars while maintaining the band's love for pop sensibility. This effort will also pay homage to those who matter most; the fans. "With every record we're trying to push ourselves as artists and challenge our fans," says Padilla, "They are our driving force behind what we do. Without them we couldn't have accomplished what we have. We all agree that they are our energy."http://myspace.com/otenki

Blood Rooted

Blood Rooted was formed in the summer of 2006 when guitarist Danny Blacker finished his stint in the US Navy, and drummer Kevin Young was finishing up school. The two friends from high school spent time writing songs by sending sequenced Guitar Pro files back and forth until the summer of 2007; when the two finally moved back to Houston to complete Blood Rooted. With out a practice space, or other band members, the pair were forced to make due. As the summer went by, the two were able to secure a practice space and search for new members.Gilbert Boyer, a friend and former band mate, started jamming with the duo and later joined on to play bass. After a frustrating run to find a singer, Blood Rooted gave a chance to another friend and former band mate, Paul Morrow. Seeing the potential in Paul, he was asked to join the band. The group rehearsed for a few months and feverishly searched for a second guitar player, but to no avail. Blood Rooted decided to play shows in the local Houston area as a foursome.Blood Rooted is taking on the Houston Metal scene and preparing to take the next step in their career. http://bloodrooted.com

Rogue Wave is an alternative rock band signed to Jack Johnson's label Brushfire Records (they released 2 previous albums with Sub Pop). Rogue Wave is headed by Zach Schwartz (aka Zach Rogue), who created the band after losing his job in the dot-com bust. Their first album was Out of the Shadow which was written, recorded and produced entirely by Zach Rogue (except the drums) - released privately in 2003 and finally re-released in 2004 on Subpop. In the autumn of 2004 they went on a national tour of the US, which lasted two years. They have been compared in the music press to The Shins. Their second album, Descended Like Vultures, was released in October of 2005. They are also featured on the Stubbs: The Zombie Soundtrack doing a cover of Buddy Holly's "Everyday". A live version of their Out of the Shadow track, "Every Moment", appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Napoleon Dynamite. However, the song never appeared in the movie itself. In addition, the song "Eyes" was featured twice in the Ryan Reynolds movie Just Friends this fall, and the first episode of NBC's Heroes. The Fox show The O.C. has used Rogue Wave songs, "Publish My Love" (DLV) and "Interruptions" (10:1 EP) as well as included "Publish My Love" on The O.C. Mix 5, a collection of songs used in the show. Rogue Wave recently recorded an exclusive song for the new movie, "Spiderman 3". Until very recently, the band lineup consisted of Zach Rogue (Vocals, Guitar), Pat Spurgeon (Drums, Samples, Guitar, Vocals), Gram LeBron (Keyboards, Guitar, Drums, Vocals) and Evan Farrell (Bass, Vocals). Farrell replaced original bassist Sonya Westcott in Autumn of 2004. Unfortunately, in December 2007, bassist Farrell passed away in a house fire. A link to the memorial paypal fund set up to help support the Farrell family can be found on the band's website www.roguewavemusic.com. Their new bassist is Patrick Abernethy. Zach Rogue was previously a guitarist in the Bay Area band The Desoto Reds. Pat Spurgeon has played with bands Antenna, Stranded at the Drive In, Ramona The Pest, Brando, Steve Kowalski, and has also released solo work as The Phantom Drummer. Gram LeBron has been involved in the bands: Schrasj, Sad Like Crazy, Conundrum, Jessica Six, All Transistor  and has also released solo work as Golden Gram. Evan Farrell has played with the following bands: Japonize Elephants, Mega Mousse, Amaldecor, Big Mule, Hunted Haunted Bazergahn Klezmorchestra, Grande Rouge, Kentucky Nightmare, and Mama HooHoo. Sonya Westcott was in the band Venus Bleeding prior to her time with Rogue Wave and is currently working on an album with her new project. Most recently, Rogue Wave released Asleep At Heaven's Gate in September of 2007. They are currently wrapping up their US winter tour to start their European tour. They plan to tour the states again in April 2008.

Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr. The “retro” tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of the Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. “He showed me two songs and I didn’t understand what I was listening to,” Wolf recalls. “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.” And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson. Expectations are high for the admitted vinyl junkie who never planned on taking his crooning public. Hawthorne’s hanging-by-a-string falsetto and breakbeat production on his first recorded effort, the tender “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” are simultaneously Smokey and J Dilla – equal parts “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Fall in Love.” “It’s soul,” he explains, “But it’s new.” Hawthorne has produced and played instruments for much of his life, but never intended to become a singer. He isn’t formally trained, and never sang in the church choir or in any of the bands he was in before founding the County (formerly the County Commissioners). But here he is, new school soul sensation, who has taken the Motown assembly-line production model and eliminated nearly every element but himself and a few hired hands. “I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs,” says Peanut Butter Wolf. “Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.” And for those willing to believe anything is possible, be grateful to have Mayer Hawthorne on the scene. It’s not just throwback music anymore – this revival is all about progression. -Ronnie Reese (Wax Poetics / Rollingstone.com)

For Matt Ragland, primary songwriter and acoustic guitarist, the release of their debut album, nelo, was a dream nearly 10 years in the making; going all the way back to when he first picked up an acoustic guitar in high school. He was soon writing songs and jamming with school friends and fellow Dallas natives Stephen Goodson (electric guitar) and Chris Hill (drums). A couple of years later, while in college, Ragland was refining his songwriting and performing around Austin with singer Reid Umstattd while Goodson and Hill were perfecting their own chops studying jazz at the University of North Texas in Denton. By 2002, they all reconvened — along with another UNT alum, multi-instrumentalist Mike St. Clair (bass, trombone, trumpet), — and nelo was born. Well, unofficially, at least. According to Ragland, nelo didn’t officially take off until August of ’05 — the month he and the rest of the band left Texas for Athens, Ga. “That was really the defining moment,” he says, “when I called everyone and said, ‘OK, I’m ready to really do this. If you want to do it, too, come and join me.’ I wanted there to be that unifying moment where we all packed our bags and moved somewhere with one goal in mind. It was time to get serious.” Years before moving to Austin to Athens, Ragland had a feeling he had the makings of the perfect ensemble. All he lacked was a proper singer. “Reid and I had been going to Camp Longhorn in Texas together for many, many years — from third grade all the way up to college,” he says. “I remember Reid singing one day and being blown away. Our connection was immediate. I wanted to write songs and Reid wanted to sing. It was a good match.” Fast forward a few years, and nelo was well on its way toward firmly establishing itself on the Athens music scene. But a homemade demo was stirring up quite a buzz back home in Texas, too — so much so that nelo was soon playing to packed crowds in both states. Among those drawn to the buzz, was producer, studio owner and Willie Nelson-nephew Freddy Fletcher, who quickly made a deal that led Ragland and Co. straight into an Austin studio to work on their debut. Starting in March ‘09, nelo will be releasing a new single each month through July. The first single, “Love Solution” from their new EP, Two Years Ago E.P., will be available exclusively via iTunes, finishing up with the summer release of the full EP itself. Songs such as “Story of our Lives” and “Breakthrough” are expected to hit the mark with fans and critics alike. Ragland still marvels, "There is no greater satisfaction for me and the band than to record and play live. I've written so many songs in the last few years. We've got a lot of music to get out there. The new E.P. is only the beginning. I feel like the band gets closer as a family, and tighter as musicians, with every brief tour that we go on. Our fans keep us going, and the thought of recording our new songs keeps us excited."

NeverShoutNever! is the alias of a young Missouri native, Christofer Drew Ingle, an American acoustic pop musician. After recording an EP by himself in his basement, NeverShoutNever! became an instant online success story averaging over 30,000 online plays a day, headlining shows throughout the Midwest, and becoming the #1 Unsigned Artist on Myspace. NeverShoutNever! released his first real EP, Yippee!, on July 29th, 2008. On July 30, 2008, he was featured on TRL, where he performed his single 'Bigcitydreams'. In 2008, Christofer toured with Hellogoodbye, Ace Enders, Jamestown Story, Owl City, & Handshakes and Highfives throughout the US, as well as regional dates in support of Meg & Dia.

In an interview, Christofer revealed that there is no longer an exclamation point after his name and that he will spell NeverShoutNever as one word when he is feeling happy, but three words when he isn't. Warner Bros. Records is spelling his name as "Never Shout Never" for the upcoming release. Never Shout Never started touring with The Scene Aesthetic, The Honorary Title, and The Bigger Lights in late February 2009 and then toured with bands such as Forever the Sickest Kids, The Cab, and Mercy Mercedes, among others in spring 2009 as part of The Bamboozle Roadshow 2009. He played at both The Bamboozle Left 2009 and The Bamboozle 2009. NeverShoutNever also toured with Boys Like Girls, and The Ready Set.

The next EP from Never Shout Never was released in June of 2009. The first single off the EP was released on iTunes. Christofer announced on May 29, 2009, that he had signed to Warner Bros. Records, ending a major-label bidding war. As part of the deal, Christofer will run and make releases on his own imprint label, Loveway Records. The debut full-length album from Never Shout Never is being produced by Butch Walker.

The Cab is an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, signed to Fueled By Ramen subsidiary Decaydance Records. Their debut album, Whisper War, was released on April 29, 2008. They have also been called "The Band You Need To Know 2008" by Alternative Press. Band members Alex Deleon and Cash Colligan first began playing together in high school, and recorded demos as a duo which they put up on their MySpace page. Alex DeLeon asked drummer Alex Johnson (who was playing in a local hardcore band) to join The Cab. In late 2005, they were a full band with guitarist Paul Garcia, guitar/pianist Alex Marshall, and drummer Alex Johnson, and they played their first show at Rock n' Java in Las Vegas. The band signed to local label Olympus Records in January 2006; however, they released no material on Olympus. They gave a demo to Spencer Smith of Panic at the Disco at a Cobra Starship/Boys Like Girls/Cartel show, who helped them sign to Decaydance Records in May 2007. Shortly after this, the band's members graduated from high school. During this time they decided to replace Garcia with Ian Crawford, who moved from Washington to join the band. Blender named them #75 on their Top 100 Hot Report in September 2007, before they had actually released any official material. The group has toured with We The Kings, Metro Station, Cobra Starship, Charlotte Sometimes, Forever the Sickest Kids, and others. In February 2008, their touring van flipped over in Wisconsin, but none of the band members were seriously injured, and they only missed one tour date. In March 2008 the band played SXSW. Their Matt Squire-produced debut album, Whisper War was released on April 29, 2008 which featured Brendon Urie of Panic At The Disco and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy on the first single off the CD "One of THOSE Nights", which was written by Stump. The videos for "I'll Run" and "One Of THOSE Nights" feature members of Panic! At the Disco, while the latter also features Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy. As of February 15, 2008, the featured song from the album, "I'll Run", had over 300,000 hits on the band's MySpace page. On May 7, 2008, Whisper War debuted at #108 for its first week of sales and was named the #1 Top Heatseeker by Billboard. On June 1, 2009 it was announced through www.symphonysoldier.com (Alex DeLeon's blog) that Ian Crawford had left the band on good terms and he is now currently touring with Panic! At the Disco as their stand in guitar player. On August 19th, 2009 it was announced that Cash Colligan left the band to focus more on his restaurant Johnny and Harry's. In October Cash Colligan announced he was joining the local Las Vegas band, Play For Keeps.

Every Avenue

In a recent interview, mid-western pop rockers Every Avenue were asked a question that would normally be difficult to answer:  “How would you describe your sound?”  For vocalist Dave Strauchman the answer was simple:  “We sound like Every Avenue.”  His response could not be more true.  Every Avenue blends a style that is all at once innovative and reminiscent of a time in rock and roll when the name of the game was simply to have fun. The Marysville, Michigan quintet has been climbing the industry ladder since 2003 and, armed with a spectacular new record and a heavy tour schedule, it seems that ladder stretches pretty high into the sky. Every Avenue formed in 2003 and self-released two EP’s in 2004 and 2006 before signing to the Southern California label, Fearless Records, in 2007, who released their acclaimed EP AH!. In February 2008, the band released its debut full length, Shh... Just Go With It and watched it rise to #27 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart.  The record’s first single, "Where Were You?" received play on Yahoo Radio and AOL Radio and was also featured on “MTV’s Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet”, gaining more than 150,000 downloads on Mark Hoppus’ "Hi My Name Is Mark" blog on I-Tunes. The video also won MTVU’s The Freshman.   With their second album Picture Perfect, Every Avenue is set to take things to a new level. The band bounced in and out of studios throughout much of the winter and spring working hard on the LP, produced Mitch Allan (Jonas Brothers, Faith Hill) and Mike Green (Paramore, The Higher, Set Your Goals).  “We spent all of our down time in L.A. writing and recording,” remembers guitarist Jimmie Deeghan.  “It was a long process.  Any time we had off it seemed we were flying some place to record. The experience was rough, great, awful, amazing, stressful, and rewarding all rolled into one.”  The highly anticipated follow up to Shh... Just Go With It, the album contains 11 euphoric, huge-sounding tracks, showcasing the band’s ability to diversify their hooks.  Picture Perfect offers a much wider variety of songs than their debut, ranging from mid-tempo jams to fun sing-a-longs to radio-ready hits.  "We are really happy with the way the album came out," said guitarist Joshua Randall. "We were able to try a lot of things that we have always wanted to try."  The excited and accomplished vibe radiating from the band reverberates on every track of Picture Perfect, which will hit stores in November 2009 courtesy of Fearless Records. When asked about the future and what it means for the band, Jimmie simply says, "We'd rather be touring and playing music than anything else." Fans can expect to see that excitement reflected in every single second of any Every Avenue performance. Spending nearly 300 days a year on the road, including appearances at the Vans Warped Tour, the band has completed tours with such acts as All Time Low, Mayday Parade, The Maine, The Audition, Boys Like Girls, and Metro Station.  The remainder of 2009 will find the band on tour with Hey Monday in the United Kingdom, before heading back for a full U.S. tour with The White Tie Affair, and a big support slot scheduled for the start of 2010.   For Every Avenue, the journey is just beginning.  A fun approach to music that is fresh and unique, a dedicated fan base, a strong and supportive label, and a new record that will have people singing along from start to finish is just the tip of the iceberg when talking about the band that CampusCircle.net calls “pure rock n’ roll joy.”  With so much already done and so much left to do, the band clearly says it best:  “Hopes and dreams and memories, you cant take away from me.”

Alkaline Trio is a punk rock band from Chicago, Illinois consisting of Matt Skiba (guitar/vocals), Dan Andriano (bass/vocals), and Derek Grant (drums/backing vocals). Their music is characterized by dark lyrics, catchy hooks, fast tempos and recurring subjects of alcoholism, depression, shattered relationships, drugs and death. The band formed in December of 1996, originally consisting of Skiba, Rob Doran (bass/vocals), and Glenn Porter (drums/vocals). 1997 saw the release of the band's first EP, Sundials. This was followed shortly after by the departure of Doran. He was replaced by Andriano, who had been the singer for Tuesday and bassist for the ska band Slapstick. The band released their second EP, entitled For Your Lungs Only, in 1998, which began to build them a sizable fan base in the American Midwest. Later that year, they released their first full-length album, Goddamnit, followed byMaybe I'll Catch Fire in 2000. Both were released on Asian Man Records. Also in 2000, the band released a collection of their previously-released EPs on a self-titled album. Following the success of their Asian Man releases, Alkaline Trio signed to Vagrant. Joined by new drummer Mike Felumlee (previously of the Smoking Popes), From Here To Infirmary was released in 2001. It was their first album to see any interest from alternative radio and the mainstream media, with the semi-hit punk single "Stupid Kid" and the inclusion of the song "Armageddon" on the Tony Hawk's Underground video game. Their cover of "Over at the Frankenstein Place" was included in the compilation The Rocky Horror Punk Rock Show, an album made to pay tribute to the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show. After the release, Felumlee left the band too and was replaced by Grant, previously of The Suicide Machines. Their next full-length album was Good Mourning, released in 2003, with the album's launch single "We've Had Enough" seeing a considerable amount of commercial success. The album was a significant departure from earlier works, featuring greater production value and a noticeable move toward a more mainstream sound. The band has also appeared on various compilation albums, notably Plea for Peace Vol. 1 and Rock Against Bush Vol. 1. Skiba and Andriano have both independently recorded split records, Skiba with Kevin Seconds on Asian Man Records and Andriano with Mike Felumlee on Double Zero Records, as well as jointly performing backing vocal duties on the album This Is Unity Music by Common Rider. They have also recorded two split EPs with bands who are no longer together: one with Hot Water Music in 2000 and the other with One Man Army in 2004. Alkaline Trio released their fifth studio album on Vagrant Records, entitled Crimson, on May 24, 2005, which featured the single "Time to Waste." The single for this song also included bonus tracks produced by Mass Giorgini. The tracks "Mercy Me" and "Burn" have also been released as singles from the album. In 2004 Andriano became a member of The Falcon, a super-group of consisting of The Lawrence Arms' bassist/co-vocalist Brendan Kelly (with who he had played with in Slapstick), and Neil Hennessy, drummer from The Lawrence Arms. The band released a 5-song EP in 2004, and its first full-length Unicornography in September of 2006. In 2006 Matt Skiba collaborated with Josiah Steinbrick for the band Heavens. In 2008 Alkaline Trio released Agony & Irony on Epic Records. The album charted at #13 on the Billboard 200.

Cursive

Cursive is an indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, United States. The band record for the label Saddle Creek Records and, along with Bright Eyes are one of its flagship artists. The band was formed in 1995 by Tim Kasher, Matt Maginn, Steve Pedersen (all formerly of Slowdown Virginia), and drummer Clint Schnase. In 1997, they released Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes. After a few years of touring the band broke up in 1998. They posthumously released The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song in the fall of that year. A year later in the summer of 1999 the band reformed. Pedersen had started law school so Ted Stevens (formerly of Lullaby for the Working Class) stepped in and joined the band. In 2000, their album, Domestica, a concept album written like a one-act play documenting the lies, hate and deceit associated with a divorce, gained them much attention from fans and critics alike and they toured with At the Drive-In. Cursive added Gretta Cohn in 2001 on cello. The strings added complimentary sounds to that summer's Burst and Bloom. In 2002, the band toured on the Take Action! Tour. Saddle Creek Records released The Ugly Organ in 2003, a series of internal monologues that reflects insecurities and self-doubt amidst the turmoil of life on an ever-turning emotional carousel. The music magazine, Rolling Stone, gave the album a 4-star rating, while alternative music magazine Alternative Press rated the album a perfect 5 out of 5. In 2004 The Cure selected Cursive to tour with them on their Curiosa tour. Afterwards the band went on hiatus with no specified return date. The label put out a compilation album of unreleased songs and B-sides, The Difference Between Houses and Homes on August 9, 2005. In mid-2005 Gretta left the band to pursue other musical opportunities. Instead of replacing her, the band remained a four-piece. After Cursive's hiatus, Saddle Creek announced that Kasher had temporarily stopped his work on his side project, The Good Life, to start recording an album with Cursive. The new album, Happy Hollow (named for an area of Omaha around Happy Hollow Boulevard, running parallel to Saddle Creek Road, and, perhaps, a comment on midwestern city life), was released August 22, 2006. Its first single was "Dorothy At Forty," released on July 11th, 2006. With this album Kasher turned his focus away from self-reflective lyrics to concentrate on what he thought were bad politics, empty suburban lives, and religious hypocrisy. Music Magazines Spin, URB, Time Out New York and Blender gave the record a 4 star rating, and Rolling Stone, gave the album a 3.5-star rating, while alternative music magazine Alternative Press rated the album a perfect 5 out of 5 saying “Cursive haven't just redefined their sound--they've transcended it.” Happy Hollow features a five-piece horn section, a concept first introduced on the songs "Art is Hard" and "Gentleman Caller" on "The Ugly Organ" The October following the release, the band revealed plans to bring audience participation to its catalog, offering fans a chance to remix its song "Bad Sects" through a competition on the website. The finalist is scheduled to appear as a B-side on an upcoming Cursive single. Cursive released their latest album, "Mama, I'm Swollen", on March 10th, 2009.

The Dear & Departed

Similar Artists: AFI | Eighteen Visions | Take The Crown | William Control | The Confession

The Dear & Departed rise above the noise. Like a mournful violin melody cutting through a chaotic symphony, the band's dark aesthetic and esoteric approach to their mix of punk and new wave has more in common with The Cure, The Church and Sisters Of Mercy than the increasingly pedestrian sub-par offerings cluttering up the pages of the monthly music magazines. They are a fresh breath in a room filled with stagnant air. In their short existence as a band, The Dear & Departed have built a devoted following and boast quite a story, sharing stages with AFI and Avenged Sevenfold in America and overseas and laying their hat down in their adopted Orange County hometown to craft their lush debut album. Chris Vrenna, whose production resume includes U2, Smashing Pumpkins and Killing Joke in addition to his work as drummer/programmer for Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and Gnarls Barkley, is producing the band's debut album, with additional production from AFI's Jade Puget. It is a story most Hollywood scribes would kill to have written. Dan Under and Joel Bourne have survived a lot together since moving to America from Australia and New Zealand. They have slept on couches, in vans and in squats and watched "sure thing" record deals fall apart. There have been triumphs as well, including patronage from platinum bands (like AFI, who invited Dan Under to sing on "Decemberundeground") and mutual respect from cult artists alike. In a short amount of time, The Dear & Departed has won an international fanbase and developed even further into a potent outfit that mixes in disparate influences from New Order to Placebo. Backed by newly launched Los Angeles based record company SCIENCE, and with new members Darren Parkinson and Welsh import David Williams firmly in place, The Dear & Departed's darkly romantic artistic vision will prove as unstoppable as its member's determination to be heard. Their debut full length Something Quite Peculiar hit shelves in May 2007 and continues to be causing serious waves in the stagnant waters of modern music.

Seneca Ireland

It's been three years since Seneca burst onto the Irish music scene with their first ever live performance at Dolan’s where they scooped the local heats of the Hardest Working Band competition.Since then, their ascent has been steady and consistent - the four-piece independent outfit seamlessly hop off one ladder rung and on to the next, garnering accolades and an ever expanding legion of fans along the way. Seneca is: Rob Hope (vocals, guitar & keys), Yvonne Conaty (vocals, bass & keys), Brendan O'Gorman (guitar), and Daragh O' Loughlin (drums). The band's collective energy is as powerful from the studio as it is the stage; Rob's remarkable range, Brendan's distinctive hooks and sweeping guitar lines, Yvonne's magnetic bass playing and Daragh's explosive drumming, gel together to electrifying effect.Rave reviews have poured in to the Seneca camp from the likes of Stuart Clark and Jackie Hayden of Hot Press Magazine. Fusing a range of genres and distinctive sounds from rock to indie folk, adjectives like 'fresh' and 'original' have regularly been stamped on the Seneca sound by music fans and pundits, from home and abroad. It was clear from the offset; the Irish music brigade has an itch for a spanking new noise, and Seneca have the stuff to scratch it.Seneca’s debut single, 'Smile', went straight in at number 33 in the Irish charts when it was released late last year, and a very respectable finishing position of 27 gave the band even more reason to smile.Fast forward a few months and Seneca were rocking their way to the top 14 finalist line-up of the National Murphy's Live 08 Band Competition. All the while, touring extensively throughout the country, headlining in venues such as Dolans, Crawdaddy and Roisin Dubh while supporting top acts including Kila, The Frank and Walters, Republic of Loose and also very gratefully involved in an acoustic set at Historic Glenstall Abbey sharing the stage with Moya Brennan of Clannad.Album track 'So Beautiful' was selected for the ' Ceol' Seachtain Na Gaeilge album which featured the cream of Irish talent including Bell X1, The Corrs, Kila and Paddy Casey, to name but a few, the Ceol Album is a collection of songs performed in Irish (Gaeilge). The second single 'Clarity', released on Friday June 13 reached number 19 in the Irish single charts. Seneca’s tunes 'The Outside' and 'Empty Seat', were featured on Setanta Sports Irish International ladies Soccer documentary entitled 'Winning Women', while also included on RTE's Capital D program. The long awaited debut album ‘Sweeter Than Bourbon’ was released on June 20th 2008. Brimming with superbly crafted songs like 'Marks', 'Sleepless Amazing', 'Playing Fair' and 'Good for What Ails You'. The Sweeter Than Bourbon menu also features the two singles, 'Smile' and 'Clarity'. 'Sweeter than Bourbon' is listed by L.E.G magazine as one of the top 20 albums of 2008. Jackie Hayden of Hotpress gave some much appreciated kudos to the band by making them his Pick of the Fortnight in Hotpress Magazine. Tony Fenton of today FM made the album track “Down to Today” his shows Daily Download and stated “Down to Today is another single contender”. The end of 2008 saw 'Sweeter than Bourbon' nominated for best Album of the Year by Clare People Interactive-Irish Music Awards and also nominated for the best new comers award in the Irish Mid-West Media Awards.Seneca teamed with ‘In-Outdoor’ management/promotions Company in the USA who stated: "This four-piece is one of the most promising and talented Irish bands to have emerged in recent years". 2009 saw the band clock up a six month tour of the United States in 2009 which took in over 90 shows, 25 States and over 40,000 miles. While there they played numerous high profile festivals, teamed up and performed with Rock and Roll hall of fame legend Bernie Worrell (Talking Heads and Parliament), perform at the infamous Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, The Boulder Theatre in Colorado, and The Denver Post Underground Music Fest as well as many, many more great events.http://seneca.ie/

The Big Pink

There’s something steady but explosive about London's The Big Pink. The band has compressed 50 years of loveless and lovelorn rock and roll into a sometimes unsettled but frequently tender circle. They’re a truly modern  pop group - seamlessly, the band melds folkish and warm melodies, the spiritual tranquility of soul and gospel, the rhythmic propulsion of rave, the white noise of punk, the glitchy textures of electronica, and the heavy drones of your favorite New York
rock bands for a sound that’s both distant and utterly familiar.

But above and beyond it all, they sing about love: “Love for everything,” they
proclaim. They call what they do “Armageddon love songs”, a neat way of
describing their sinister-sweet ruminations on the subject. “If there’s an
underbelly of depression,” they say, “we sugar-coat it.”

Not that they’re nihilists; they’re having too good a time to be negative. “We're a
positive band. We love each other, and we love life. It’s all very exciting. We’re
having the best time. There’s nothing bad in our lives and we’ve got nothing to
complain about.”

Some of the tracks on A Brief History Of Love include “A Brief History Of Love,”
“Too Young To Love” and “Love In Vain.” There’s a lot of love in what The Big
Pink do. Milo Cordell, one half of the duo, considers Lost And Lookin’ by Sam
Cooke to be the best love song ever while his other half, Robbie Furze, believes
that every song they do has “got to be as good as (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The
Bay by Otis Redding.” He adds: “You can argue about music and styles, but if we
can write our My Girl then nothing else matters.”

They virtually have already: on “Introduction To Awareness,” the B-side of their
brilliant second single “Velvet,” amid the swathes of synth and wraith-like vocals,
is the faltering bassline to the classic tune Smokey Robinson wrote for The
Temptations.

Furze and Cordell were destined to make bittersweet, soulfully intense drone-
disco together. They met at a drum’n’bass rave in the middle of nowhere on
millennium eve, but they’ve only been recording as Big Pink since 2007.

They’re quite different but a perfect match. Milo’s father, Denny Cordell, was a
record producer who worked on such legendary late-‘60s singles as Procul
Harum’s A Whiter Shade Of Pale and Joe Cocker’s With A Little Help From My
Friends. Robbie’s family were “not particularly musical”, although his parents’
love of The Band did lead them to name him Robbie after Robbie Robertson. He
moved around a lot – including one place that happened to be next door to a
squat inhabited by none other than goth-metal overlords Killing Joke, whose
notorious frontman Jaz Coleman took a shine to Robbie’s mum, much to his
dad’s chagrin.

Not surprisingly, after being pummelled into submission by the Joke’s apocalyptic
clatter coming through the walls, Robbie first got into metal – Metallica, Pantera,
Slayer, Napalm Death – and then the proto-industrial noise of Einsturzende
Neubaten and their successors such as Ministry, Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch
Nails, followed by the propulsive Eurobeat of Front 242.

He toured with Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot and boss of Digital Hardcore
Recordings and became a DHR artist in his own right: Panic DHH, who released
an album described by Kerrang as “a fully-fledged vision of electronically treated
music devastating in scope and utterly visceral in execution.”

Back in England, Milo was experiencing his own version of nirvana: hearing
Klaxons for the first time, at Madame JoJo’s in December 2005. “That was the
first time a UK band played music I wanted to hear,” he says. The first wave of
Noughties punk-funkers were not, he says, “aggressive or punky enough; they
cared if they went out of time or broke a string.” Klaxons, on the other hand,
“didn't give a fuck.”

Milo liked the band so much he went out and started a label. Since then, Merok
have put out early releases by Klaxons, Crystal Castles, Teenagers, Telepathe
and Titus Andronicus. He also joined forces with Robbie for a second label called
Hatechannel. Their intention? “To be offensive and aggressive, and harder than
Digital Hardcore.”

It was inevitable, after several years behind the scenes and dabbling with
marginal, experimental noise, that the pair would decide to do something with
broader appeal. And so, in December ’07, Big Pink were born.

“We had a conversation that went, ‘Let's start a noise band’,” says Milo. Early
sessions involved a ProTools set-up, a bunch of Marshall amps at two ends of a
rehearsal space, two guitars, some synths, a bunch of FX pedals and a lot of
“fucking around.”

“We built up walls and walls of sound,” they explain, “which we looped up and put
a beat behind, then we added the vocal melodies and the words. Eventually, they
became Big Pink songs.”

So why Big Pink?

“Because,” says Robbie, “my parents were obsessed with The Band and my dad
had The Last Waltz documentary, which I found amazing - those guys, that's a
real rock’n’roll band. They spent 15 years on the road.”

Initially, Milo had other plans, name-wise. “I wanted to be called Big Black but we
were beaten to it. Then I got into homoerotic/gay symbolism: our first MySpace
page was full of young boys with erections and guys sucking cock... So we went
for Big Pink, because ‘big’ suggests delusions of grandeur and ‘pink’ is gay and
phallic.”

The idea for the band as a whole was quite simple at first: they wanted to be “the
digital Velvet Underground”, combining melody and noise in a way that was
“more Phil Spector than My Bloody Valentine.” Now their aim is even simpler.

“We’ve made the progression from noise and aggression towards melody and
song structure, and now we consider ourselves a soul band,” says Robbie.
“That’s soul as in Otis Redding, Joe Tex, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Solomon
Burke, the Stax label...”

Still, he and Milo recognize the dissonance in what they do; the enormous wall of
rhythm and sound that they erect around their melodies.

“Okay,” says Milo, “if Otis Redding and John Cale hung out together and fucked,
their child would be Robbie.”  Acknowledging the biological impossibility of such
a coupling, he changes his mind. “Or if Aretha Franklin and Al Jourgenson had a
kid...”

Big Pink aren’t necessarily a “druggy band”; rather their music and lyrics reflect
on the drug experience and revel in the afterglow. The effect of what they do is
narcotic: it will knock you out, stupefy you, make you feel blissed-out. “That's a
love in itself,” they say, “the love of that experience...”

The New York Times applauded their revival of "the ominous, feedback-drenched drones of the 1980s" In 2006, the band gained some acclaim following their Webster Hall performance with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They returned to Webster Hall in 2007 to play with one of their major influences, The Jesus and Mary Chain. The band's first UK release came in May 2008 where they played a handful of UK shows and garnered strong praise from the British media with early support from NME and Kerrang!. In November 2008, the band returned to Europe and the UK on tour supporting MGMT. Their album, out the same month, once again made a stir amongst UK media. In early 2009 APTBS signed to Mute Records.

Ani DiFranco

Angela Maria "Ani" DiFranco was born on September 23rd, 1970 from parents with Italian and Jewish-American backgrounds. Both her father, Dante, and her mother, Elisabeth, were folk musicians. She grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. and played her first gigs at the age of nine, playing in local bars in her hometown. She moved to New York City at 16 and in 1988 she made a demo which has become a highly sought-after fan item. Ani’s lyrics focus, amongst other topics, on war, GLBT issues, sexual assault, the music industry and, recently, the joy of motherhood. Early on, DiFranco saw how some talents were ignored while others were hyped up. Based on experiences in meeting with the industry she decided to stay independent and as a result she formed her own label: Righteous Babe Records(RBR among her followers). The label was formed in 1989, and a year later her self-titled debut hit the streets. From day one her popularity grew on a mouth to mouth basis. In 1991 her next relase "Not So Soft" came out, followed by yearly releases thereafter, with the exception of 2000, when she released only an EP called "Swing Set". This EP Includes a cover of Bob Dylan's "Hurricane". Ani tours both with a band and as a solo artist. Her touring pace has often been extreme and in 2005-2006 she had to take a break from touring due to tendonitis. DiFranco's father died early in the summer of 2005; however, she continued her summer tour as a tribute to him. Ani received a Woman of Courage award at the 2006 NOW conference where she also announced that she was pregnant. On January 20th 2007, her daughter Petah Lucia DiFranco Napolitano was born. Ani Difranco gave birth in her home in Buffalo. DiFranco has been toasted by the Buffalo News as the "Buffalo's leading lady of rock music." The News further said: "Through the Righteous Babe Foundation, DiFranco has backed various grassroots cultural and political organizations, supporting causes ranging from abortion rights to gay visibility." Since 2003, Ani has been nominated four consecutive times for "Best Recording package" at the Grammy awards, one of which she won, in 2003 for "Evolve." DiFranco's guitar playing is often characterized by a signature staccato style, rapid fingerpicking and use of a plethora of alternate tunings. She delivers many of her lines in a speaking style notable for its rhythmic variation. Her lyrics, which often include alliteration, metaphor, word play and a more or less gentle irony, have also received praise for their sophistication. The song "Talkin' Mrs. DiFranco Blues," by Dan Bern, strings together some of the most memorable lines from DiFranco's early career for comic effects. Although DiFranco's music has been classified as both folk rock and alternative rock, she has reached across genres since her earliest albums. DiFranco has collaborated with a wide range of artists including pop musician Prince, folk musician Utah Phillips, funk and soul jazz musician Maceo Parker and rapper Corey Parker. She has used a variety of instruments and styles: brass instrumentation was prevalent in 1998's Little Plastic Castle, strings on the 1997 live album Living in Clip and 2004's Knuckle Down, and electronics and synths in 1999's To the Teeth and DiFranco's latest studio recording, Reprieve. DiFranco herself noted that "folk music is not an acoustic guitar--that's not where the heart of it is. I use the word 'folk' in reference to punk music and rap music. It's an attitude, it's an awareness of one's heritage, and it's a community. It's subcorporate music that gives voice to different communities and their struggle against authority." The combination of personal and political is partially responsible for DiFranco's early popularity among politically active college students, some of whom set up fan pages on the web to document DiFranco's career as early as 1994. Because DiFranco's rapid rise in popularity in the mid-1990s was fueled mostly by personal contact through her many live shows and as said above the word was spread from a fan to their friends and so on rather than mainstream press, fans often expressed a feeling of community with each other. DiFranco has expressed political views outside of her music. During the 2000 U.S. presidential election, she encouraged voting for Ralph Nader in non-battleground states. She supported Dennis Kucinich in the 2004 Democratic primaries. DiFranco has occasionally joined with Prince in discussing publicly the problems associated with major record companies. DiFranco is openly proud of her label, which employs a number of people in her hometown of Buffalo. In a 1997 open letter to Ms. magazine she expressed displeasure that what she considers a way to ensure her own artistic freedom was seen by others solely in terms of its financial success. Her label has set a standard for other young female singer/song writers. This has not just made her an icon for independent music, but it has also helped establish her as a true feminist which also see the importance of feminism among men. In her poem Reprieve she states that "feminism ain´t about equality, it´s about reprieve". DiFranco performed with Cyndi Lauper on "Sisters of Avalon", a track from Lauper's 2005 collection The Body Acoustic. She also performed with fellow folk singer Dar Williams on "Comfortably Numb", a Pink Floyd cover song from Williams' 2005 album, My Better Self. Her most recent work Canon is a career retrospective that gives the listener access to all of her albums through a careful handpicked selection which includes recorded versions of classics such as "Shameless", "Both Hands" and "Overlap" were 3 of the new recorded song versons on Canon. Difranco re-recorded the songs together with Allison Miller on drums and Todd Sickafose on bass. Together with Canon, she relased a poetry book with her own painting called "Verses." Her latest album is called "Red Letter Year," released in late 2008. Just prior to its release, Difranco said the following about the CD: "I’m really excited. I have a new band I’m working with, and they’re all over it. Actually, there are a lot of people. I have more guests and friends and other artists involved this time around than I have in a long time. It’s fuckin’ sprawling, this record. Glasgow’s Camera Obscura have had several line-up changes since founder members Tracyanne Campbell and Gavin Dunbar first began rehearsing together back in 1996. Since the amicable departure of Nigel Baillie (percussionist, trumpeter and proud daddy) in 2008, who still pops up onstage occasionally, they have existed as a five-piece:

Tracyanne Campbell (Lead Singer / Songwriter)
Gavin Dunbar (Bass)
Lee Thomson (Drums)
Kenny McKeeve (Guitar / Songwriter)
Carey Lander (Keyboards)

Prior to 2006, the group had released several low-key indie singles (the earliest of which were collated on a Japanese-only EP called Rare UK Bird in 1999) and two full-length studio albums: Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi (on the local DIY label Andmoresound Records – 2001); and Underachievers Please Try Harder (through Spanish independent Elefant Records – 2003).

A key supporter of the group throughout this time was the late, legendary DJ John Peel who gave them frequent plays and sessions (they were to do five Peel Sessions in total). The band gigged intermittently and over time, they were able to build up a dedicated, cult following throughout UK and Europe. Their Madrid-based label sub-licensed Underachievers… to the respected US independent label Merge Records. Camera Obscura toured North America for the first time in the summer of 2004. Progress was to prove steady but despite discerning fans continuing to discover them in higher numbers, the prospect of the band becoming a full-time concern still remained tantalisingly elusive.

In the summer of 2005, Camera Obscura asked the Swedish producer Jari Haapalainen (Ed Harcourt, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Concretes) to work on their next album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country (Elefant / Merge - 2006). Pre-production sessions for the new album began in September 2005 and Jari turned out to be an inspired choice; fully realising not just the potential of Tracyanne Campbell’s songs and remarkable voice, but also the ensemble musicianship of the group as a whole.

The finished album was and is a strong, confident artistic statement, boasting a more powerful, cohesive sound than any previous Camera Obscura offerings. Brilliantly produced and beautifully arranged, it featured entrancing, immediate pop/rock songs such as the lead single 'Lloyd I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken' alongside more downbeat yet melodic offerings 'Dory Previn' and 'Country Mile'.

Reaction from fans and media was enthusiastic: "You might not find heartache as enchanting as this anywhere else," stated All Music Guide. ‘Lloyd…’, proved the perfect step-off as well, scoring Single of the Week in The Guardian and repeated plays on high profile radio shows (Jonathan Ross and Dermot O’ Leary on Radio 2; Record of the Week on Lauren Laverne’s XFM London show; an A-listing at BBC 6music). Three more singles followed from the album – 'Let’s Get Out Of This Country', 'If Looks Could Kill' and 'Tears For Affairs' – with all being supported by extensive touring both and home and abroad (three separate visits to the US alone) and further great press (including a glowing Rising feature in MOJO).

More record labels were attracted. In 2009, Camera Obscura signed a worldwide deal with feted indie 4AD, in a move that some fans felt a perfect match:
"It almost feels old fashioned to have a favourite band, but guess what, Camera Obscura are unashamedly mine and have been for the past five years. Now they find themselves on 4AD, one time home to my previous favourites The Cocteau Twins. The styles are very different but once more there are achingly beautiful tunes from an incomparable Scottish female voice emanating from the coolest label." -Scottish international footballer, Pat Nevin (yes - Pat Nevin)

After his successful touches on the last album, they returned to Sweden to work once more with producer Jari Haapalainen. My Maudlin Career, to be released on April 20th 2009 showcases Jari's wonderful understanding with the band. Songs such as 'French Navy', 'Honey In The Sun', 'Swans' and 'Away With Murder' typify another strong body of work that’s sure to delight, ensuring the band to continue their upward trajectory.

Speaking about My Maudlin Career, lead singer Tracyanne Campbell commented:
"Some people who have heard it say it's intense and quite dark. I suppose it is in a way. We were even more open and brave when making it than we were with the last record. I've never been so brutal when its come to writing lyrics. I wouldn't even call them lyrics. Just documentation of what was going on with me for a while. I truly believe it's the best we've done so far."

The critics seemed to agree with her; “Make no mistake, this is a remarkably beautiful record. (It) exists to reward those both mad, and sad, in love” NME (9/10), "The band’s finest work, My Maudlin Career continues the pop rush we’ve come to expect from Camera Obscura but also develops the band’s sound and identity in significant ways." Popmatters, "(It) feels as if it could have been released any time in the last 50-odd years, but the inspired arrangements - and, of course, Campbell's indelible voice - make it sound fresh, too." Pitchfork (8.3/10), “This feels like a breakthrough.” Observer Music Monthly (4/5). It was also to become the first album of theirs to chart, breaking both the Top 40 (at 32) in the UK and the Billboard Hot 100 in the US (at 87), confirming their status as an essential band.

Camera Obscura returned to the road in March 2009 with intimate shows in London, New York and at the South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas and around the release of My Maudlin Career undertook a large UK tour with triumphant shows at both London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire and The Barrowlands Ballroom in their hometown. They head to the US, Canada and Mexico for five weeks at the end of May 2009.

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog has been creating music in various incarnations for a good four years now. Beginning with The Psychedelic Swamp, a concept album realized in the damp ruin of a flooded basement with waterlogged guitars and a digital delay pedal, the band has simmered on the back burner of our musical lives for most of its existence but we've recently renewed our resolve to forge ahead and give Dr. Dog the attention we think it deserves.

Although Dr. Dog has as many as 20 honorary "members" who have assisted in various (mostly spiritual) capacities through the years, the core of the band consists of five musicians. Our standard instrumentation includes two guitars, bass, drums, keyboard and three part harmonies. The Beach Boys, Beatles, Tom Waits, David Bowie and Neil Young are influences, but we would be remiss in not acknowledging our debt to Pavement, Palace Brothers, R. Stevie Moore or Roy Wood.

Currently, the lineup is as such: Toby Leaman on bass and singing, Scott McMicken on woof mud distortion solo guitar and voice, Andrew Jones on lean clean occasionally tremolo'd guitar, Juston Stens on trapset and harmonies and Zach Miller on keyboard(s). We've all done our share of playing. Toby and Scott have played together in a myriad of bands including Raccoon, Unleash the Bastards, and Beard; Andrew played bass in Raccoon and manages the phenomenal The Teeth; Zach has played with Bradford Trojan and Traffic Jam and studied jazz guitar; and Juston is the man behind the punk outfits It's Turbo Time and Oddnormal.

We've played around Philadelphia at a good number of places, including the TLA, North Star, the Fire, Khyber, Mill Creek Tavern and Doc Watson's, the Lucky Cat and StarFoods (Brooklyn and Manhattan, respectively), Rex's (West Chester, PA),. We have accompanied My Morning Jacket on two short tours, - the second of which also featured M. Ward - who personally requested that Dr. Dog open for them.

Aside from the aforementioned Swamp album - a self-produced, self-recorded low-fi four track recording - we have two other recordings. Toothbrush is a compilation of fourth generation eight-track recordings culled from the past few years. Easy Beat was recorded earlier this year and is our first proper album.

A Day To Remember

A Day to Remember is a post-hardcore band from Ocala, Florida, United States formed in 2003. Their music generally consists of growled verses, clean pop-punk style choruses and breakdowns. Early years (2003-2006) After all playing in different bands in the Ocala music scene, singer Jeremy McKinnon, guitarists Neil Westfall and Tom Denney, bassist Joshua Woodard, and drummer Bobby Scruggs came together in 2003. Soon after, the band embarked on a "DIY" tour, playing well over 200 shows, making a name for themselves. They were signed to Indianola Records, from which they recorded their first full length, titled And Their Name Was Treason in May 2005. The album sold 8,000 copies on word of mouth alone, but the band felt that bigger and better things were to come. "A friend of mine said he had the AIM screenname of someone at Victory Records,” Woodard said. "I didn’t believe him, but I still started communicating with the guy. We IM’ed back and forth for about six months, and it happened that we were playing with the band On The Last Day in a town outside of Chicago—and this guy was going to be there filming it. It was our first time we ever played in Illinois, yet the 50-60 kids there were singing along to our tunes like they’d been fans all their lives. Victory Records (2007-present) Soon after signing with Victory, the band with their new drummer Alex Shellnutt went into Zing Studios to record their second full length. The album, titled For Those Who Have Heart was released in January 2007 on Victory Records and peaked at #17 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart and #43 on the Top Independent Albums chart. On September 24, 2007, they put a cover of Kelly Clarkson's hit single, "Since U Been Gone" on their MySpace. This was later featured on the re-release of For Those Who Have Heart, released in February 2008. A Day to Remember toured the United Kingdom for the first time ever in January 2008, and were later nominated for "Best International Newcomer" at the 2008 Kerrang! Awards,[2] but lost to Black Tide.[3] Afterwards, the band had a lengthy tour opening for Silverstein along with The Devil Wears Prada, and Protest the Hero (who dropped off the tour and were replaced by A Static Lullaby). They then played The Bamboozle Left on April 6 at the Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine, California, one of the two days at the 2008 Bamboozle Festival in East Rutherford, New Jersey on May 3 and 4, as well as the Download Festival in June, and the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. Before playing the Download Festival, they toured the UK with The Devil Wears Prada and Alesana on the Road To Download Tour. In mid 2008, the band played all the U.S. dates of the "Easycore Tour" along with New Found Glory, Four Year Strong, Crime in Stereo and International Superheroes of Hardcore. A remixed and remastered version of their first album, And Their Name Was Treason, titled Old Record, was released on October 28, 2008 through Victory Records. In December 2008, A Day to Remember toured Australia with Parkway Drive, Suicide Silence, The Acacia Strain and Confession. That month, the band also finished the recording their third studio album, Homesick. It was released on February 2, 2009 in Europe and February 3, 2009 in the United States and placed at #21 on Billboard's Top 200 Listings and at #1 on Top Independent Albums. It was additionally featured in Rolling Stone's "Top 40 Albums" that month, hitting number 21. Following two sold-out UK tours, A Day to Remember went on a European tour in February 2009, with the leg of the tour that took the band to Germany for the first time supported by For The Fallen Dreams and Kenai. A Day to Remember was scheduled to tour the United States from March to May 2009 with The Devil Wears Prada, Sky Eats Airplane and Emarosa. Prior to the tour, Tom Denney broke his wrist; filling in for him is Kevin Skaff formerly of Four Letter Lie. They also toured the UK with For The Fallen Dreams and Azriel. They are also scheduled to play all dates of Warped Tour 2009, to play at Download Festival 2009, to tour Asia, Australia and New Zealand in August and September, and support Bring Me The Horizon on their October 2009 tour of the United Kingdom along with August Burns Red. The band also contributed a track to Punk Goes Pop 2 record from Fearless Records, covering The Fray's Over My Head (Cable Car). On June 2, 2009, the band announced that Tom Denney had left the band. The band stated that Denney left because he wants to focus on his marriage, a family, and his recording studio. Tom has been noted for recording such bands as The Starlight Getaway, Dang were on fire, as well as a number of solo acts. However, he will remain a part of the writing process. His official replacement is Kevin Skaff, formerly of Four Letter Lie. Current Members * Jeremy McKinnon - lead vocals * Neil Westfall - guitars, backing vocals * Kevin Skaff - vocals, guitars * Joshua Woodard - bass * Alex Shelnutt - drums, percussion

Silverstein is a 5-piece post-hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario, Canada; formed in 2000. The band name was taken from the famous children's author Shel Silverstein. After several lineup changes, the band acquired Billy Hamilton, a local fan who learned of the band's need for a bassist on the Internet message board "The 905 Board" (an Ontario area outreach board which used to be for local musicians). In Christmas of 2001, he joined the band after Shane Told helped him learn the music for the songs. Following a rehearsal on Boxing Day (December 26) in 2001, he officially debuted with Silverstein. The next spring, original guitarist Richard McWalter left the band to move to Victoria, British Columbia to study engineering. He was then replaced by Neil Boshart, childhood friend of Shane Told. The new lineup recorded a second EP, When the Shadows Beam, in preparation for their first tour in Eastern Canada. The band then signed to Victory Records in October of 2002 with a complete lineup as Hamilton attempted to complete his secondary education one semester early. The January after, the band recorded their full-length debut CD When Broken is Easily Fixed, released on the Victory Records label. In 2005 the band performed on the Never Sleep Again tour with bands such as Aiden, Hawthorne Heights and Bayside—a tour during which Bayside's drummer John "Beatz" Holohan would be killed. In January-February 2006, they toured with fellow Canadians Simple Plan in Europe. They then toured Canada with the Taste of Chaos Tour, and also toured Europe, Japan, and Australia. The band toured on the 2006 Vans Warped Tour, in support of their current studio album Discovering the Waterfront and an EP compilation 18 Candles: The Early Years. The Early years compiles the band's first two self-financed EPs with some acoustic and live material as well as single remix of the Discovering The Waterfront hit Smile in Your Sleep. Discovering the Waterfront was re-released in September 2006 with an extra song, the band's cover of Lifetime's Rodeo Clown and a DVD. In 2006, Silverstein was nominated for a Juno Award in the "Best New Band" category, but lost to Bedouin Soundclash. In Fall 2006, they headlined The Never Shave Again Tour, along with Aiden, It Dies Today, and He Is Legend. Following completion of their third CD, the band played a few shows in the spring, and then engaged in an all-summer tour with Rise Against. The band toured the United States in Fall 2007 with From Autumn to Ashes and then went on a month-long European tour with Blessthefall. Following tours of Australia and Japan in January 2008, the band played their first "Cross-Canada" headlining tour with Protest the Hero, Ill Scarlett and The Devil Wears Prada, which sold out across the country. They recently completed a U.S. tour with A Day To Remember, Protest the Hero and The Devil Wears Prada. Protest the Hero dropped off the Tour and Pierce the Veil took over for them on a few show dates. They completed a 2008 Europe tour in for May and June, including several festivals, and are playing a limited summer festival schedule. The band's third full-length album, Arrivals and Departures, was released on July 3, 2007, and was designated by AP Magazine as one of the most eagerly anticipated CDs of 2007. Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182, Finch) produced the CD. As of early August, the CD had sold 62,000 copies. Silverstein contributed a new acoustic version of their song Red Light Pledge to the Punk Goes Acoustic 2 compilation, released May 8, 2007 through Fearless Records. Silverstein (presumably Told) is listed as a client of Melissa Cross, a voice coach for lead singers. After heavy touring for their album, Arrivals and Departures, in Canada, the US, the UK, and other areas in Europe during late 2007 and early 2008, which included the band's 1000th show in Paris, France, the band is taking the summer off. In a news post on their site, Silverstein's Paul Koehler said the band is now "taking a bit of downtown time to write a new album!" In addition to a few Canadian festival dates, the band has announced Japan dates for September, and ticketing sites are reporting United States dates for October and November. According to a post in the forums on their website by vocalist Shane Told, the album should be out early 2009. * Shane Told – lead vocals, occasional guitar * Neil Boshart – lead guitar * Josh Bradford – rhythm guitar * Bill Hamilton – bass, backing vocals * Paul Koehler – drums, percussion
