Autolux

Seeing Autolux live is like being placed on a conveyor belt at an android factory. Bit by bit, song by song, they replace the eyes, ears, limbs, and hearts of everyone in the crowd. Converting the faithful followers into a small militia of mechanical automatons. The guitars are aluminum silver, the drummer makes her own clothes, all awesome and partly from space. Funky beats and feedback. Everyone sings. Everything is distorted and distressed, without losing melodies or precision. The allure of Autolux is their ability to create dark and desolate soundscapes that still convey undertones of sensuality. Their music is immensely moving and dramatic, but also colorful. They rebel against norms without ever being impish or contemptuous. If ever there was a band deserving of comparisons to Caravaggio, Autolux is it. The Los Angeles based trio, formed in late 2000, (comprised of Eugene Goreshter: vocals/bass, Carla Azar: vocals/drums, and Greg Edwards: vocals/guitar, has just recently signed to TBD Records in the US for the release of their sophomore album, Transit Transit, and ATP Recordings for the rest of the world. The album will be released on August 3rd, 2010. The band’s first record, Future Perfect, was released on T Bone Burnett s label, DMZ, under Columbia. Future Perfect was released in the winter of 2004 and began with "Turnstile Blues", featuring one of the most distinctive drumbeats and musical atmospheres of any album in recent memory. A Pitchfork review stated, "In the first 10 seconds of the album opener, Carla Azar shames most every beat-maker with her ridiculous Leibezeit-cum-Bonham percussion." The song created a vacuum of precise tumult that pulled you in, stretched you out, and spit your altered shape through a flawless cycle of songs. The album's otherworldly moods and eclectic makeup of songs made it difficult to categorize and gained the band much deserved respect. Four and half years have passed since the band stopped touring on Future Perfect. But the space since then has been filled with activity - in spite of any obstacles thrown their way, including the process of freeing themselves from Columbia and escaping with full ownership of Future Perfect. As part of the long build up to the release of Transit Transit, they made available, "Audience No.2", as a 'pay what you will’ track on their website. Soon after, they joined PJ Harvey for a tour of Russia. During this time they also continued to play their own shows, trying out new songs live, and in some cases revisiting the recorded versions to make necessary alterations or, in some cases, total deletions. In the summer of 2009, they collaborated with the painter, Kill Pixie (Mark Whalen) for 'Future Spa', an art exhibition/sound installation in Los Angeles. In more recent months, the band has toured extensively, including an appearance at All Tomorrow's Parties in upstate New York and an opening spot with Thom Yorke's Atoms For Peace. Now, the much-awaited follow-up, Transit Transit is finally here. It begins no less uniquely than its predecessor, although this time the subtler concussion of rhythm that starts the title track is an announcement of change, and the following mood and vocal-- a metaphysical sorbet. If you have been waiting, somewhat impatiently, for this record, Transit Transit has yielded an unexpected mix of material, but has everything you had hoped for. And if Autolux is a band you are just discovering, here is a deep and profound world of noise and emotion to immerse yourself in. The band produced Transit Transit themselves with guitarist/vocalist Greg Edwards serving as engineer. The record was recorded - at Space 23, the bands makeshift studio in their rehearsal room near downtown Los Angeles. The title track "Transit Transit" (the last song to be recorded) was started in Denmark by Edwards, using a virtually unplayable upright piano and a sample of a coffin-style freezer found in a nearby basement, and then finished back in Los Angeles. There is a notable sonic progression to Transit Transit: samples, vintage synthesizers, and manipulated ambience glue central song components together. There are a lot more vocal harmonies and piano driven songs, even a bit of trumpet. Vocal duties are shared by all three members throughout the album - their voices strangely similar - but each having a definite emotional character. Bassist/ singer, Eugene Goreshter continues to innovate his bass style, effortlessly modernizing the instrument's melodic role on songs like "Census" and "Supertoys", while still providing an on-edge rawness and groove-filled momentum. Edwards' guitars serve to modulate the moods throughout the record, constantly evoking feelings found in the space between emotions. And Carla Azar's sturdy, creative drumming (a phenomenon to behold on stage) continues on record with plenty of hook beats - ferocious and orchestral, at once. The majority of the album was mixed by Kennie Takahashi, three of the tracks being mixed by Dave Sardy, and then mastered by Bob Ludwig. Artist Kill Pixie and Carla created the artwork for Transit Transit.

The Rebirth Brass Band is a New Orleans brass band. The group was founded in 1983 by tuba player Philip Frazier, his brother Keith Frazier and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins, along with other musicians with them at the Joseph S. Clark Sr. High School in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans. Rebirth is known for combining traditional New Orleans brass band music, including the New Orleans tradition of second line with funk, jazz, and soul influences. In 1992, Ruffins and Rebirth split amicably after Ruffins decided not to accompany the band on a trip to Africa. Ruffins later formed his own Band, the Barbacue Swingers, who play a more traditional style of New Orleans jazz music. Rebirth's longstanding regular Tuesday night gig at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans is one of the pillars of the New Orleans music scene, and has served as a reliable introduction to the city's nightlife for many newly arrived college students. The band regularly tours in North America and Europe, second only to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band in popularity and acclaim among the brass bands of New Orleans.

The Smashing Pumpkins

Similar Artists: Zwan | Billy Corgan | James Iha | Stone Temple Pilots | Silverchair

The Smashing Pumpkins are an influential American alternative rock band, formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. Billy Corgan and James Iha met in a record store, and began performing in local nightclubs with their bassist, D'Arcy Wretzky, using a drum machine. Playing with a drum machine frustrated both the band and their audience, and so Chicago jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was hired soon afterwards. Less influenced by punk than many of their contemporaries, the Pumpkins had a densely layered, guitar-heavy sound, with powerful loud-to-soft-to-loud transitions, while still picking up grunge, heavy metal, power pop, psychedelic rock, shoegazer-style production. In later recordings, namely Adore, the fourth album, an electronica flair filtered in after Jimmy Chamberlin temporarily left the band for drug rehab. Though Chamberlin returned for their fifth album, MACHINA/The Machines of God, electronica undertones remained. The emotional tone of bandleader Billy Corgan's songs ranged from angry (X.Y.U.) to dour (Disarm) to jubilant (Cherub Rock). Selling more than 18.3 million albums in the United States alone (as of 2006), Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s. However, internal fighting, diminishing sales, drug problems, cultural vitality, and what is speculated to be improper treatment from their record company, hampered the band in their later years, leading to the 2000 break-up. Prior to the complete dissolution of the original line-up, their final tour (dubbed "Sacred and Profane"), featured former Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur to fill in the gap left by D'Arcy Wretzky, who left in September of 1999. Besides touring with the band she also appeared in the videos accompanying "MACHINA/The Machines of God". The band's final album, "MACHINA II / The Friends And Enemies of Modern Music" was unofficially released on vinyl in 2000, prior to their break-up, with the record company refusing to back the band with a pressing. Only 25 vinyl copies were made, each signed by the band. The album was then released across various fan sites by those who received the album and transferred it digitally, as a final tribute to the band's supporters. Problems have been seen since then with Billy Corgan, James Iha (who later joined A Perfect Circle), and D'Arcy Wretzky, both of whom started their own record company Scratchie Records. Billy Corgan would continue from there first forming the band Zwan with members Matt Sweeney, Paz Lenchantin, David Pajo, and Jimmy Chamberlin. After a bad breakup shortly after their debut album Mary Star of the Sea Billy turned solo and released the album TheFutureEmbrace. Jimmy Chamberlin formed the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, and Corgan recorded vocals for them on the track entitled Loki Cat. In mid-april 2006 Smashing Pumpkins "reunited" with original members Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin. They performed live as Smashing Pumpkins for the first time in 6 and a half years on May 22, 2007 in Paris, France. There, the band unveiled new members Jeff Schroeder, Ginger Reyes and Lisa Harriton who took over rhythm guitarist, bassist and keyboard duties respectively. The band's latest studio album, titled "Zeitgeist", was released on July 10, 2007 to mixed reviews. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, #1 on the United World Chart, and in the top ten for several other countries. On Jan 2, 2008 the Pumpkins released the American Gothic EP exclusively on iTunes as part of an expanded version of Zeitgeist. The four tracks: "The Rose March", "Again Again Again (The Crux)", "Pox", and "Sunkissed" demonstrate a more acoustic sound when compared to the rest of Zeitgeist. In March, 2008 the group contributed the song "Superchrist" to a compilation CD released by Guitar Center. Though Corgan and Chamberlin have continued to record as a duo, Jeff Schroeder indicated that he might be contributing to future recordings. No longer signed to a record label, Corgan and Chamberlin purchased a recording studio in Chicago and began recording in May, again, as a pair. The band released the single G.L.O.W. on October 1st of 2008.

Kady Malloy and Andrea Young Project

Their meeting each other was a beautiful accident, but their decision to work together was filled with dynamic purpose. For Kady Malloy and Andrea Young, "When you have so much in common, drive, and great chemistry, you might as well start making music..." The girls met at an audition for someone putting together an all-girl group in Oklahoma, and clicked immediately. Within a couple days the pair had written songs together and were fine-tuning harmonies. At the time, they hoped they would be picked for the group together, but luckily, that wasn't in the cards. Andrea then went through several different band configurations, and Kady headed towards a solo career, both of which taught them many lessons about the music business and what they really wanted out of life. They made a deal that as soon as their situations changed, they would take charge and make their own music...and decisions. As soon as they found themselves free, they were on the phone planning their new project. Kady made the top 8 female finalists on Season 7 of American Idol. Although she was an instant sensation for her vocal impressions, Kady's ownvoice was more compelling for the judges than anyone else's. Her voice is one of a kind, with a soulful richness that has blossomed with the country influence and platform of the duo. Onstage, she is fearless, fun, and fresh... a truly energized entertainer. Andrea is a seasoned Nashville musician that has performed with many acts including Halfway to Hazard, Kenny Olson, Jerrod Niemann, George McCorkle (of MTB), and with Sixwire on "Can You Duet." With a sweet, soft harmony and a soaring violin floating around Kady's voice, the pair sound like they were made for each other. Onstage, her performances are filled with "ferocious finesse."Both of them grew up with classical backgrounds; Andrea started Suzuki violin at 2 years old and Kady began singing opera in gradeschool. "We really learned how to appreciate all types of music....from Schubert to Zeppelin, to Dolly Parton. We loved it all growing up." These influences, and supportive parents have brought them to where they are today. Currently, the girls are working with producer D. Scott Miller (Bo Bice, Brothers of the Southland) on their pop-country debut. Their songs are filled with a soulful familiarity and the production delivers a powerful, modern twist. Their widely varied influences breathe through the music they're creating. "Our lives are filled with the project! We are playing shows across the country, and writing with hit songwriters. We couldn't ask for more...!"

Westbound Departure

On June 10, 2008 we got lost driving on a lonely highway through the woods of Arkansas. With no gas in the 91' Ford we accepted the fact that we would be stranded overnight until the world around us woke back up. There we were, hopeless and alone. Lost in the American Night. We've never felt so alive and free.

The Canvas Waiting

The Canvas Waiting is an Austin-based group with a well-deserved reputation for delivering a genuinely passionate and inspiring performance. Singer Nathan Medina's unmatched vocal talent serves as the perfect vehicle for The Canvas Waiting's striking words and simple melodies. The group's lyrical boldness combines with their catchy blend of folk and alternative rock to create sincere works of peace, honesty, and hope.

Slightly Legal

Slightly Legal is charging into the Texas music scene, gaining momentum through their one of a kind style of music. Based in College Station, TX, the band uses a collective style to make their music unique. Their music takes inspiration from a broad range of sounds including country, rock, punk, and even funk. Slightly Legal has music anyone can appreciate and relate to.

Ludo

Ludo is an alternative rock band which formed in 2003 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Andrew Volpe (vocals, guitar), Tim Ferrell (guitar, vocals), Tim Convy (synths) and Matt Palermo (drums). Before LUDO became a household name by selling over 100,000 copies of their Island Records debut album, You’re Awful, I Love You, the band had built a strong following in the Midwest by peddling their self-released records out of the back of their van. Blowing through thousands of these albums, Ludo thought they would never see the light of day again… until today. Ludo is proud to announce that the band’s out-of-print 2003 self-titled debut and 2005 rock opera follow-up, Broken Bride, will be available again on September 29th via the band’s own label, Redbird Records & Touring. “Our fan base has grown quite a bit in the last year,” says Ludo’s Tim Convy (Moog synthesizer, keyboards, vocals). “As a result, we have plenty of new fans who are only familiar with You're Awful, I Love You. We wanted to put out our first two albums to a wider audience, to sort of bring them up to speed before we release our new album next year.” Ludo’s self-titled album gives fans a glimpse into their humble beginnings, where the four-piece began to hone their quirky sensibilities and ability to write peppy and infectious rock hooks. Before Ludo recorded the breakthrough single “Love Me Dead,” which was a Top 10 Modern Rock single, and “Go-Getter Greg” (both off You’re Awful…), the group had sold over 10,000 copies of their self-released, self-titled disc. With songs like “Hum Along” and “Good Will Hunting By Myself” it’s easy to see why their fan base became so rabid and demanded more Ludo! The re-issue includes a slew of bonus material, including the never-before released track "Elektra's Complex," a fast-paced tongue-in-cheek tune that's been a live favorite for years and a never-released 10-song bonus disc recorded live at Ludo's first birthday show at the legendary Mississippi Nights in St. Louis in 2004. The group delivered the Broken Bride EP a year later, which is an epic love story that spans time and space. The album tells the tale of a man’s desperate attempt to save his wife who dies in a car crash by traveling back in time, but his travel goes awry and… well, can’t give too much away. The EP shows a growth in the band’s songwriting abilities and quickly became a fan favorite, boasting huge choruses and a “timeless” plotline. In 2006, the University Theater group at the University of Chicago even adapted the rock opera for a staged performance and the University of Nevada - Las Vegas performed a Bride medley at a UNLV football game. Ludo is currently writing their major label follow-up to You’re Awful, I Love You and plan to hit the studio once again with Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More, Train).

There For Tomorrow

Similar Artists: Mayday Parade | Every Avenue | Anarbor | The Cab | All Time Low

There for Tomorrow is a band from Orlando, Florida that combines alternative rock/post-hardcore music with adrenaline filled lyrics. Featured members are Maika Maile (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), Christian Climer (lead guitar/backing vocals), Jay Enriquez (bass/backing vocals), and Chris Kamrada (drums). They are currently signed to Hopeless/Sub City Records. There for Tomorrow formed in 2003 at a time when all of its members were teenagers (although Christian Climer did not join the band until 2006). They were originally called The Kick Off, but changed their name after playing numerous local shows. The band's debut album Point of Origin was released on 30 April 2004. They began playing local radio station showcase concerts, which led to stints on the southeastern leg of the Vans Warped Tour in 2006 and 2007. After the tour, they met with James Paul Wisner (Underoath, Paramore), who produced their 2007 Pages EP, which attracted the attention of the alternative rock label Hopeless Records. He returned to produce their self titled EP, released on 5 August 2008, featuring the first single "No More Room to Breathe." Just over three months later, the band won the MTVU Woodie Award for breakout artist of the year, beating established acts such as All Time Low and We the Kings. In February 2009, the band joined We the Kings with other bands on the Secret Valentine Tour. They also played on the 2009 Warped Tour. A Little Faster, There for Tomorrow's debut full-length album on Hopeless Records, was released on 9 June 2009. The group is influenced by bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182, Third Eye Blind, and The Hives.

The Graduate

Similar Artists: The Junior Varsity | The Dangerous Summer | Valencia | Spitalfield | You, Me, and Everyone We Know

Formed in the demise of two popular Central-Illinois bands, The Graduate is a collaboration between long time friends Tim Moore, Corey Warning, Matt Kennedy, Max Sauer, and Jared Wuestenberg. After several years of heavy touring in their previous efforts, the band has been able to stir quite a buzz, and has amassed a formidable following that feels more like a family than a fan-base. This quintet has developed their own formula, inspired by such bands as U2, Third Eye Blind, Mute Math, Coldplay, and Death Cab for Cutie. In these troubled economic times it’s hard not to notice the subtle irony in the tale of a young band called the Graduate, who are unemployed, without a record label, and looking for work. But the indie-pop-rock quintet, based out of Springfield, IL, isn’t standing in a line waiting for a bailout. These guys are busy working on new songs, shopping for a record label, and making plans for the future... The group came together in 2005 when two central Illinois bands, Best of Winter and J.A.C.K., dissolved into one and became the Graduate.  Immediately after getting together the guys started doing the time-honored, several-bands-on-a-bill, couch-surfing method of the traveling indie-emo-pop-punk bands, making fans and friends along the way while constantly working at crafting memorable songs and developing a killer live show. The hard work and persistent touring paid dividends for the Graduate quite quickly as compared to the usual slow steps required in climbing the music industry ladder. In April of 2006 they independently released an EP called Horror Show, and stepped up the touring. Soon they signed with Icon MES a small, but aggressive record label, that gave the extra push needed to help the Graduate to rise to the next level. By late 2006 the band saw their picture on the cover of the prestigious college music magazine, CMJ New Music Report, as the most added band on college radio in early December. The label then financed a studio effort with producer/engineer Brian McTernan that produced a full-length, radio-ready album, Anhedonia. After an April 2007 release the record received a fair amount of college radio airplay and the band become the buzz of the business. That summer they played the Warped Tour, Lollapalooza, and a major concert in Europe, then logged many miles across the USA, playing all kinds of venues in support of the record and seeing the accumulating sales results. 2008 seemed to be heading the same direction, with constant touring throughout the summer and label plans to release a deluxe edition of Anhedonia, including vinyl copies, set for early fall. Then rather suddenly on October 31, Icon MES folded and the Graduate was without a record label. The band members, all relatively young in their mid-twenties, took the loss in stride, holing up in the group’s practice spot on Springfield’s north side to write and develop another album’s worth of material and take a break from the hectic touring schedule. They take this business seriously while still having lots of fun with it. At the rehearsal house the practical tools of modern musicians---I-phones, Macbooks, and digital recording hardware---rest right along side acoustic instruments, wire cables, and music industry magazines. The band camaraderie is tight and after four years of successful togetherness the group exudes a confidence in the future and in the ability of the band to keep going and make a mark in the music business.

"A flyleaf is the blank page at the front of a book," explains Lacey Mosley, Flyleaf's vocalist. "It's the dedication page, the place you write a message to someone you're giving a book to. And, that's kind of what our songs are -- personal messages that provide a few moments of clarity before the story begins". Their music is a mix of hard rock styles. What started back in the mid-nineties as an experiment fusing youth culture and social action has turned into a multi-faceted, multi-faced creature called Bassnectar. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginative. Bassnectar combines sound and force with weight while spanning the spectrum of sonic style, covering every genre imaginable, and smashing it all into a collision of intense, wobbling basslines, hypnotic soundscapes, and pretty much anything that strikes his fancy. He calls the end product “omnitempo maximalism,” which basically means no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge. Whether remixing, collaborating, writing, DJing, performing live or working on constant social networking, Bassnectar’s music is the lure and social impact is the very sincere intention. According to Ashton, “We are so blessed, and so deeply fortunate to be alive and awake right now…it’s a basic truth, but it’s very powerful. I think privilege confers responsibility, and Bassnectar is a reflection of that opportunity to give back; the motion of my cells bouncing back at the world.” Idealistic? Maybe. But with wall-to-wall shows night after night in city after city, with endless music being concocted and pumped out of the labs by a growing legion of collaborators and bass-scientists, and with an ever-growing fan base of loyal bass-freaks on the loose, maybe idealism isn’t all that bad… Hit up http://bassnectar.net/ for free music, tickets, tour dates, blogs, and so much more!

For every heartache there is a day where everything feels complete. The music will be dynamic, it will be as loud as often as it is soft. Screams will become whispers. The Gaslight Anthem is a punk rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States. Since forming in 2005, they have released three full-length albums and an EP. They were described by Kerrang! magazine as “the best new band you’ll hear in 2008.” The lineup consists of Brian Fallon (vocals and guitar), Alex Levine (bass), Benny Horowitz (drums), and Alex Rosamilia (guitar). The Gaslight Anthem’s music embraces many elements of blues, classic rock, and punk rock. The band has described their sound as “Bruce Springsteen singing for a Cure cover band, with a tinge more aggression.” The group’s fondness for Springsteen, a significant influence on their music, is a fact celebrated by fans and critics alike. Representative of such views, one critic wrote, “The Gaslight Anthem are like something out of speculative fiction: this is what pop music would be if Springsteen hadn’t listened to his producer, let the Ramones record ‘Hungry Heart,’ and launched the C.B.G.B.’ers into megastardom.” The band released its first LP, Sink or Swim, in 2007 through XOXO Records, and toured with many reputable bands, including Against Me!, The Draft, Dead to Me, and Fake Problems. The Gaslight Anthem’s second release, a 4-song EP entitled Señor and the Queen, was released on January 29th, 2008 by Sabot Productions. Their second full-length, The ‘59 Sound, was released on August 19, 2008 on Side One Dummy Records. The album debuted at #70 on the Billboard top 200. It was produced by Ted Hutt, who has produced albums for The Bouncing Souls, Flogging Molly, and MxPx. On August 6, 2008 they became the first band to ever appear on the cover of Kerrang! magazine without the publication having previously written a single word about them. In Fall 2008, the band toured with Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, and Thrice. On December 9, 2008, the Gaslight Anthem made their television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, performing the song the “The ‘59 Sound.”

Rival Schools is a Post Hardcore band from New York, United States that was formed in 1999 by members from several influential 80's and 90's hardcore bands (including Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, CIV, Youth of Today, Burn, Project X, Judge, Moondog, Warzone, Side by Side, and Iceburn). The band started from the ashes of a short lived project, World's Fastest Car which had Artie Shepard of Mind Over Matter and Bad Trip fame involved, but the project went no further than demos. Apparently Walter and Artie had a difference of opinions hence the split. Artie then started Errortype:11 * Walter Schreifels - vocals, guitar * Cache Tolman - bass * Sam Siegler - drums * Ian Love - guitar (left in 2002) The band decided to start a series of EPs where multiple groups form a single band and they looked to Jonah Matranga formerly of Far, New End Original and Gratitude. The lone result was titled Rival Schools United by Onelinedrawing, released on 24th July 2001. Their full-length album titled United By Fate was released on 28th August the same year on Island Records. Shortly after the release of United By Fate, the band released their first single, Used for Glue. The second single released from the album was Good Things. Both releases enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV, both in the US and UK. Ian Love left the band in 2002, and played as part of an Experimental-Rock band named Cardia, releasing an eponymous album in 2003. A second album was expected for spring/summer 2003, but it did not surface. However, the master tapes of the album were leaked onto the internet, comprised of eleven tracks: 01- Just a Second 02- The Perspective Reach 03- I Don't Know 04- Your Answer 05- See What You Got 06- Looking 07- Don't Change 08- Shared Information 09- Surrendering Position 10- Seems So Real 11- Get Out of This Place Rival Schools parted ways in September 2003. Schreifels formed a new band called Walking Concert, releasing an album in 2004. The second album will now be released sometime in 2006. Sammy Siegler joined Nightmare of You and briefly provided percussion for Limp Bizkit. The band reformed for shows in Summer 2008 and a new album is expected. The band was originally named Rival Schools United by Fate, after a video game, but due to legal reasons had to change their name to just Rival Schools.

Fake Problems is an American rock band from Naples, Florida. They released their first album, How Far Our Bodies Go, on Sabot Productions on April 27, 2007. Their second record, It's Great to Be Alive, was released through Side One Dummy Records on February 17, 2009. Growing up is never easy, but when you’re in a band it often seems impossible. Make the same record twice and you’re chastised for being repetitive, but if you make too large of a sonic shift your fan base will desert you. Luckily Naples, Florida’s Fake Problems have never had to deal with this dilemma because with each release they’ve not only organically reinvented their sound, they’ve also successfully redefined who they are as musicians and human beings in the process. The culmination of this is the band’s SideOneDummy debut It’s Great To Be Alive, which shows Fake Problems’ unique brand of indie rock finally shaking off the insecurity and soul-searching of adolescence and sees the band embracing a sense of perspective that can only be gained by spending countless months on the road touring, laughing and writing music they believe in. In order to capture their creative vision for It’s Great To Be Alive the band packed up their van and headed to the cornfields of Omaha, Nebraska, where they spent two weeks tracking the album at ARC Studios with producer A.J. Mogis (Cursive, Rilo Kiley, The Faint). Although this might seem like an unconventional choice for a band who have toured with decidedly more aggressive peers such as Against Me! and the Riverboat Gamblers, Fake Problems were so prepared going into the studio they didn’t have to worry about getting bogged down with technicalities. “We knew exactly what order we wanted the record to be in and what auxiliary instruments we wanted to use on the songs,” Farren explains adding that Perry arranged the strings, Look Mexico’s Matt Agrella arranged the horns—and at one point the band even enlisted the help of a seven-piece horn section comprised of University of Nebraska students and teachers. The result is an album that combines the band’s punk rock roots with elements of folk and indie rock to create a unique amalgam of music that’s as distinctive as Farren’s soulful tenor. “I’m definitely influenced by my musical surroundings, so there was never any decision to make ‘this’ or ‘that’ kind of song,” the band’s frontman explains, listing everyone from alt-country crooners like Ryan Adams to troubadours like Bob Dylan and rock revivalists such as the Hold Steady as influences this time around. “We write songs that we would want to hear from other artists,” he elaborates. “We make music that we want to listen to, so it just wouldn’t make sense to keep doing the same thing over and over again. From the sinister shuffle of “You’re A Serpent, You’re a She-Snake” to orchestral ballads like “Tabernacle Song” and intricately layered anthems like “There Are Times,” It’s Great To Be Alive is less of a traditional album and more of a sonic journey that refuses to be limited by genre constraints.

Birthed by Mouth in the year two-thousand and five, young Edward Sharpe had to wait nearly two years before he was to grow his arms and legs and fingers and toes. Immaculately conceived, his father (a Robot who had magically become a real boy…but that’s another story) declared his undying devotion to the creature. He perched the fleshy bust upon a teetering pedestal fashioned from stacked cereal boxes and positioned the display at his window for all the town to see. Young Edward soon proved no ordinary boy. Though his father had figured him deaf for his unresponsiveness to sounds, he in fact had the universally unique condition of being deaf from hearing too much or, more correctly put, too well. In plain words, he heard EVERYTHING AT ONCE. At first it proved rather painful like a wretched whining winding all hours, but very soon those who whisper visited young Edward and revealed to him the Tricks and Truths, the Ways and Plays, the Chords and Dischords of the Universe. He did not need to eat but the color of the sun, which was F#, and moved his bones to grow. His arms and legs and fingers and toes grew ‘til the tower of boxes collapsed and he laughed. He moved thru the door which was C over B# and ran thru the village hearing ALL of its music! The workers and children and painters of buildings and dogs barking madly and trees bristling softly and OH!! Young Edward could not resist! He began playing the tree which are the chords E and D ‘gainst the mice in the grass which are A played with brass and the wooden fence F and then C and repeat with a drone of B Minor to bring in the street and the Birds B to B Sharp with fluttering strings and the sky mostly C unless he wants to bring in the rain and for rain bring the F Chord bombastic with organ’s distortion and symbols a’crashin! Yes, and a music was born.

School of Seven Bells (often just SVIIB) is a dream pop/shoegaze band which formed in 2007 in Brooklyn, New York, United States. The band consists of identical twin sisters, Alejandra Deheza (vocals, bass), Claudia Deheza (vocals, keyboards) and Benjamin Curtis (guitar). The Deheza sisters are former members of On!Air!Library! and Curtis is a former member of Secret Machines and Tripping Daisy. The band is named after the School of the Seven Bells, a mythical South American pickpocket training academy. Curtis and the Deheza sisters met when both were opening on an Interpol tour. The three decided to end their commitments to their old bands, move in to a shared space, and create a home recording studio together. Their sound has been described as dreamy and ethereal, and the lyrics as abstract. Singer, Deheza, insists that the lyrics are not. However, that she is a lucid dreamer is fitting of the lofty-sounds they create. The band has an unorthodox song writing process that begins with lyrics, which are only supplemented by the music. Curtis has said this is the most important part of the band with "everything else [being] accompaniment." A before-and-after example of this process is hosted by NPR's program Day to Day (see 3:50s). In concert, Curtis, who stays mostly on lead guitar can often be seen manipulating various electronic devices in between guitar segments.

Active Child is the project of Pat Grossi, resident of Los Angeles, native of New Jersey. Inspired by his days as a choir boy and epic nights as a member of the band Weight Room, Grossi combines his soaring vocals and crunching analogue synths with the honey drip drop of echoing harps. The influence of chorale singing, along with the sensibility of non-secular music, is as apparent in Active Child’s work as the influence of synth pop bands like New Order, Joy Division and Tears for Fears. His debut collection of songs features the skilled use of various 80s-tinged synths to create ethereal, soaring soundscapes, punctuated by crisp electronic drum samples and handclaps. All of this lays the groundwork for Grossi’s exquisite vocals, which, with their unearthly sound and evocative lyrics, take on an enchanting, hymnal quality that would not be out of place amongst the richly colored sunlight of a church’s stained-glass interior. Active Child's songs are an intriguing study in contrast. The organic elements of Grossi’s angelic vocals and the occasional delicate strumming of a harp cast light on the eerie darkness created by the haunting synths and cavernous reverberating of percussion. Grossi cites the musical environment in his childhood home as an early inspiration for his own desire to make music. After participating in a school choir as a child, he joined the Philadelphia Boys Choir at age 10.

The Vaselines are an indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 1986, the band was originally made up of only vocalists/guitarists Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, but later added James Seenan and Eugene's brother Charlie Kelly on bass and drums respectively from the band Secession. McKee had formerly been a member of a band named The Pretty Flowers with Duglas T. Stewart (later of BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (later of Teenage Fanclub) and Sean Dickson (later of The Soup Dragons). Eugene had formerly played in The Famous Monsters. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain once described Kelly and McKee as his "most favorite songwriters in the whole world". The band released two singles, "Son of a Gun" and "Dying for It", prior to releasing an album. In 1989 they released their only album, Dum Dum, on the record label Rough Trade. Following the closing of the record label 53rd and 3rd, which they had originally signed to, the band broke up in 1990. However, they reunited later that year to open for Nirvana when they played in Edinburgh. Though they were not widely known when the band existed, covers of their songs by Nirvana and Kurt Cobain's tendency to mention them as an influence brought exposure to the band. With their songs "Son of a Gun" and "Molly Lips" covered on Nirvana's album Incesticide and "Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam" covered as "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" on MTV Unplugged in New York, the band gained a new audience from people who wanted to discover the bands that influenced Cobain (a similar situation happened to the band The Meat Puppets). Due to this new exposure, in 1992 Sub Pop released The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete History, a compilation that contained The Vaselines' entire body of work on one album. No longer together, members of the band moved on to new bands. Kelly went on to found the band Captain America (later renamed Eugenius). He currently performs solo. McKee founded the band Suckle and released her first solo album, Sunny Moon, in 2006. In 2008, the band reformed and began to make sporadic appearences at festivals in the United Kingdom and the United States and various tours supporting Belle and Sebastian. The band will perform at the Belle and Sebastian's second Bowlie Weekender festival in December 2010.

The group is composed of Joseph Bruce and Joseph Utsler, who perform under the respective personas of the "wicked clowns" Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope. Insane Clown Posse performs a style of hardcore hip hop known as horrorcore and is known for its elaborate live performances. The duo has earned two platinum and three gold albums. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the entire catalog of the group has sold 6.5 million units in the United States and Canada as of April 2007. Originally known as Inner City Posse, the group introduced supernatural- and horror-themed lyrics as a means of distinguishing itself stylistically. The duo founded the independent record label Psychopathic Records with Alex Abbiss as manager, and produced and starred in the feature films Big Money Hustlas and Big Money Rustlas. They formed their own professional wrestling federation, Juggalo Championship Wrestling, and later collaborated with many well-known hip hop and rock musicians. The songs of Insane Clown Posse center thematically on the mythology of the Dark Carnival, which the duo claim is a spiritual force that has revealed a series of stories known as Joker's Cards. These stories each offer a specific lesson designed to change the "evil ways" of listeners before "the end consumes us all." Insane Clown Posse has a dedicated following, often referred to by the group as Juggalos and Juggalettes.

AMB- The Axe Murder Boyz. AMB is comprised of two members, brothers by blood and bound by the music they create, Bonez Dubb & Otis. Releasing their first commercially sold record in 1999, AMB set it off on what would become a hectic and wicked ride through the music industry. Having forged a path through the underground that lead them to their current status in the music industry, AMB have self produced and promoted 5 commercially sold records. As well as running their own regional tours in support of those records, and releasing samplers, EP’s, and exclusive bonus discs along the way. Hailing from their native city of Denver, CO a.k.a. the 303, AMB grew up knowing only music. After a rising local success continued in Denver, AMB saw it was time to do it bigger and better. They signed a contract with a then new independent record label, Canonize Records. It was with Canonize Records that they formed a partnership and geared up to release their first national effort, “The Unforgiven Forest”. “The Unforgiven Forest” was released and sold better than any previous AMB release, gaining them fans across the united states as well abroad in the U.K. , Australia, and Germany. It was after the success of this record that AMB took a step in their career that no one will soon forget. They Joined the Insane Clown Posse on a 6 date mini tour in late October, and then, devastatingly, AMB signed to Psychopathic Records. It was at Psychopathic that they began to truly build their career, as well as life long friendships with some of the undergrounds finest. They went into the lotus pod studio with ICP and began creating their second national release and 7th commercially sold album entitled “Blood In, Blood Out”. This record was a sweeping variety of songs. With accapella intro and outro tracks, and a bloody red album cover, AMB made this record the way they thought it would be best, regardless of any critic or industry entity’s point of view. “Blood In, Blood Out” was released on April 18th, 2006 , and it devastated all previous AMB releases. The Road. AMB hit the road, and hard. Starting with Shaggy 2 dope’s “Fuck the Fuck Off” tour, AMB brought their new record to the stage and schooled it. It was on this tour that AMB got a real taste of what the road was like. After performing their set they would also join Shaggy on stage and rock the end of his set with him, which was a fresh way for 2 dope to put AMB down and they remain forever grateful. After the success of that tour, AMB were still hungry for the road, and promptly joined Twiztid on their “Guillotine Tour”. This tour stretched across the whole nation as well as featured a few dates in the Midwest with the Kottonmouth Kings. Again, AMB refined their set and continued to murder stages every night, again forever grateful for the opportunity Twiztid gave them. Still, AMB didn’t see rest as a factor, and quickly made their 2006 touring schedule a three-peat, as they joined Blaze Ya dead Homie on his first ever national “Tombstone Terror Tour”. This tour was just right, AMB’s set was longer than ever, and tighter than ever. Flipping their lyrics back and forth flawlessly and often changing lyrics in mid performance, this shit was fresh. This is the part of our story where everything becomes foggy, mysterious, and unclear. You’ll find no explanations here. Your search for answers, knowledge, or truth ends within the sounds of AMB’s next full length LP, the forthecoming epic album enititled “Gods Hand”. -Taken from axemurderboyz.com (APMERR)

Dayton Family

The Dayton Family is a hardcore "Gangsta Rap" group from Flint, Michigan, USA, roughly an hour north of Detroit. Flint is home to some of the most depressed, dangerous ghetto neighborhoods in America. It was from these hopeless streets that the Dayton Family arose, naming themselves after one of the city's most infamous hustling streets, Dayton Avenue. Like Detroit's Esham and Memphis' Three 6 Mafia, the Dayton Family sincerely emulated their Midwestern mentality: a dark, grim mentality focused on modest survival rather than riches or fame. Unfortunately, the group's members all endured problems with the law throughout the late '90s. Their numerous indictments prevented them from ever capitalizing on their modest success. As a result, years passed with only the occasional solo album to retain any interest in the cult group. The Dayton Family originally formed in the early 1990's. The group consisted of Bootleg ( Ira Dorsey ), Shoestring ( Raheen Peterson ), and Backstabber ( Matt Hinkle ). They decided to name the group after one of Flint's most infamous hustling streets, none other than Dayton Avenue. Immediately after the group's formation they began writing rhymes together, resulting in their first song "Dope Dayton Ave". They teamed up with local producer Steve Pitts and recorded their first full album "What's On My Mind?". It was released locally in 1993, and then again nationally on April 27, 1995. Soon after, they also contributed the song "Stick N' Move", to No Limit's "Down South Hustlers" compilation album, which helped them to gain fans in the American south. After much touring and word of mouth promotion, TDF had begun to develop quite a reputation in the hardcore "gangsta rap" underground scene, mainly across the MidWest and South. They then entered the studio to create their second album, "F.B.I." (Fuck Being Indicted). The group was now a duo consisting of Bootleg and Shoestring since Backstabber had been arrested on drug charges and sentenced to a ten year prison term between "What's on My Mind?" and "F.B.I.". The album was released on September 24, 1996. It soon went gold and managed to make it's way into the billboard R&B/rap top ten chart in late 1996. But unfortunately, just as the Dayton Family were on their way to mass recognition in the hardcore rap underground, the law intervened. But if this wan't enough hard luck, Bootleg was indicted soon after the release of F.B.I. All through the remainder of the 90's the group's members, (especially Bootleg) dealt with legal issues and jail time. Amidst this, Bootleg still managed to release his first solo album: "Death Before Dishonor" on March 23, 1999. Shoestring also released his first solo album, "Representin' Til' the World Ends" this same year. Then in 2001 Bootleg and Shoestring both released their second solo albums "Hated By Many, Loved By Few" (Bootleg) and "Cross Addicted" (Shoestring), also Bootleg's brother Ghetto E released his first solo album "Ghetto Theater" in this same year. Finally, in 2002 the group released their first LP in five years: "Welcome to the Dopehouse", with the addition of Ghetto E as the third member. The group then waited until July 26, 2005 to release their fourth LP "Family Feud" once again as the duo of Bootleg and Shoestring. The album was well received by fans and featured appearances from Capone, Cormega and Kurupt. Bootleg then proceeded to release his third solo album "The Product" on October 25, 2005. TDF recently released a 9 track EP entitled "Back on Dayton Ave." in April 2006, featuring long time staple of the "Flint Town" rap scene and collaborator, Jake the Flake as the group's third member. The Dayton Family is now signed to U Be U Records based in Saginaw, Michigan.

Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. They are not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY (with an intrinsic HOTNESS). Ghostland Observatory is perhaps most famous for their energetic live show, which more often than not features seizure-inducing light shows, stage dives, uncontrolled rave pits, interpretive dancing, back injuries, pigtails, ominous capes, and thousands of dedicated fans who have traveled from far and wide to experience the madness since the band's conception in 2004. Suicidal Tendencies is an American hardcore punk band formed in 1982 in Venice, California. Sometimes regarded as the progenitors of skate punk, they later incorporated significant heavy metal and thrash elements. The group, led by Mike Muir ("Cyco Miko"), had a rough start that included being voted "Worst Band/Biggest Assholes" in Flipside in 1982. Using the opposition to fuel creativity, they quickly gained a following, performing larger and larger gigs. As the size grew, so did the rumors of gang relations and violence (eventually leading to a Los Angeles ban on public performances by Suicidal Tendencies). The band signed with the indie label Frontier Records and issued their classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album was the best-selling hardcore album up to that point. It included many memorable songs. The video for Institutionalized was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV. It was also used in the Emilio Estevez cult classic movie Repo Man and an episode for the hit TV show Miami Vice (which included a cameo appearance by the group). Recently the track has been used in the blockbuster movie Iron Man. Their song Possessed to Skate solidified their status as a premier skate punk band. How Will I Laugh Tomorrow has become one of the band's most acclaimed songs. After lineup changes and side projects, including the Infectious Grooves, they have continued to release albums and (as of 2004) are working on a new album and a Live-DVD to be titled "Return to Venice."

High on Fire is a stoner metal band originally formed from the remnants of the legendary stoner band Sleep. Matt Pike, from Sleep, sings and plays guitar in High on Fire and founded the band with George Rice (bass) and Des Kensel (drums). High on Fire's sound is extremely heavy, drawing influences from the aforementioned Sleep, Motorhead, and even hardcore punk. The Oakland, California band formed in 1998 and released 'The Art of Self Defense' on Man Ruin's Records, in March 2000. After Man's Ruin Records folded, the album was re-released via Tee-Pee Records on CD and vinyl with new artwork and two bonus tracks: Steel Shoe (an original) and The Ursurper (Celtic Frost). Following, the band signed with Relapse Records and released 'Surrounded by Thieves' in 2002, with production help from Billy Anderson. Founding member and bass player George Rice, would leave the band shortly before recording the next album. In 2004, Relapse and Throne Records released the 'Live from the Contamination Festival' CD and LP (respectively) which was recorded in Philadelphia, PA. The CD is limited to 2000 copies and the LP only 1000. 'Blessed Black Wings', produced by Steve Albini, was released in early 2005, and was their first and only to feature Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins, Thrones) on bass. The vinyl version as well as the Japanese CD version of this album had the Judas Priest song Rapid Fire as a bonus track. In early 2006, Joe Preston left the band and was replaced by jeff matzof Zeke. High On Fire then went on to release the Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden)produced and recorded album, 'Death is This Communion,' in September 2007. To celebrate this release, and the start of their tour for the album, the band played a free show at San Francsico's Amoeba records. The band released their fifth full-length album Snakes For The Divine in February 2010 through E1 music. The album was produced by Greg Fidelman and stripped away much of the acoustic textures and layering of the previous album, leaving a monolithic heavy sound to the record.

Kylesa

Since this Savannah, Georgia, United States quintet first formed in early 2001, worrying about genre limitations has never been a priority. Taking musical chances, however, always has been. While Kylesa are as heavy as any band out there, they are beholden to no one scene and no preconceived notions of what heavy music should be. "Lots of people like to stick to one kind of music," guitarist/vocalist Philip Cope elaborates, "and even with the underground, lots of people segregate themselves into small little categories and place lots of imaginary rules on these scenes." “We just like playing heavy music and we've always liked playing it regardless of what is popular or trendy,” guitarist/vocalist Laura Pleasants adds. “It’s most rewarding for us to try and push our own boundaries of what we can to do with our music and hopefully, in the end, offer something that is at least original.” Kylesa's third full-length, Time Will Fuse Its Worth, is the eagerly-awaited follow-up to 2005’s To Walk A Middle Course, which topped many year end lists and landed the band in metal and mainstream press alike. After grabbing ink in Spin, the New York Times, and metal mainstays Revolver alike, Time Will Fuse Its Worth again showcases the band as the ultimate definition of do-it-yourself dedication. With Cope lending his ears and hands for production duties at The Jam Room, and featuring comprehensive artistic layout and packaging from Pleasants, the Kylesa of current day continues to put the band’s future in their own hands by relentlessly touring Europe and North America alike. Time Will Fuse It's Worth sees the band continuing to evolve upon Kylesa’s signature sound, seamlessly flowing from track to track encompassing listeners with sounds far and wide and an utter disregard for musical boundaries. Bringing together avant-garde experimentalism with the pure fury of dirty, sludgy riffs and raw, coexisting male and female vocals, Kylesa’s ambient noise interludes, grimy rock riffs and impassioned, gruff vocals portray the doom-inspired punishment they are capable of dishing out through the power of the band’s music. Following the release of Time Will Fuse Its Worth, the drumming duo of Jeff Porter and Carl McGinley were added to the band. “When we first started the band, we had planned on having two drummers but it didn't work out, so now it feels like everything is coming together,” Pleasants says. “There is definitely a new level of intensity to Kylesa now. Since the new lineup has gotten together we have felt the strongest creative spark yet.” Kylesa released their latest album Static Tensions on March 17, 2009. On this album, drummer Eric Hernandez was added to the band. The band's reluctance to attach itself to one sound or scene and to not play by conventional rules, along with that strong creative spark, has ultimately made Kylesa that much more versatile. With a constantly heavy touring schedule has found the band crossing boundaries, sharing bills with bands as diverse as High On Fire, Pinback, Coliseum, Torche, and Mastodon, as well as playing to enthusiastic crowds throughout Europe. "While we are no kings of one scene," says Cope, "we have, in a sense, just developed our own thing.”

Bad Religion

Similar Artists: Pennywise | NOFX | Anti-Flag | Rancid | Lagwagon

Bad Religion is a punk band from Los Angeles, California, known for poignant, erudite lyrics, and biting social commentary. The band was formed in 1980 by high school students Greg Graffin (vocals), Jay Bentley (bass guitar), Jay Ziskrout (drums), and Brett Gurewitz (guitar). In 1981, they released their eponymous debut EP on their own newly-formed label, Epitaph, managed and owned by Gurewitz. 1982 saw the release of their first full-length album, How Could Hell Be Any Worse?, which gained them a sizable following. During the recording, Ziskrout left the band and was replaced by Peter Finestone. Greg Graffin, the band's frontman, holds a Master's degree in geology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in zoology from Cornell University. His dissertation for Cornell was a comprehensive study of how modern scientists, especially those who believe in strict Darwinism, view theism and religion, and how their own religious beliefs, if any, affect their study and work. He has since published it for fans of the band. In 1983, Bad Religion released Into The Unknown, a keyboard-driven psychedelic rock album that was enormously unpopular among the band's core fan base. It is now out of print, and generally disowned by the band. However, in past years it has become a collectors item, and has gained some acceptance from fans. It now can be seen going for more than $100 on eBay, and is often pirated. In 1984, Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks) replaced Gurewitz. Bad Religion returned to a somewhat mellower, rock and roll version of their original sound with the Back to the Known, but they disbanded soon after. The band reformed in 1987 and released Suffer in 1988, cementing their comeback in the punk community. Not only is this album considered one of their best by most fans, but it is often credited with "saving" the Southern Californian punk rock scene by fans and Bad Religion's contemporaries alike. No Control (1989) and Against the Grain (1990) further increased the band's popularity, followed by Generator (1992). Before the recording sessions for the latter album commenced, drummer Pete Finestone left the band in to focus on his other band, The Fishermen. Bobby Schayer joined the band as his replacement. Recipe for Hate (1993) followed shortly thereafter. With alternative rock breaking into the mainstream, Bad Religion left Epitaph for major label Atlantic and quickly re-released Recipe for Hate on the major label. 1994's Stranger Than Fiction followed, but shortly after its release Brett Gurewitz left the band again. Officially, he cited the increasing amount of time he was spending at Epitaph's offices as The Offspring (then a part of the Epitaph roster) became one of the biggest bands of the mid-1990s. But it was well-known that the departure was not on good terms, as he later accused the band of selling out for leaving Epitaph in favor of a major label. Gurewitz recorded a song with his new band The Daredevils entitled "Hate You," reportedly directed towards Jay Bentley. Gurewitz, moreover, was struggling more seriously with heroin and other addictions that had plagued him for years. Gurewitz was replaced by Brian Baker, former member of bands such as Minor Threat and Dag Nasty. Previously, Graffin and Gurewitz had split songwriting duties, but Gurewitz's departure left Graffin as the band's lone songwriter. What followed were a series of moderately successful albums, The Gray Race (1996), No Substance (1998), and The New America (2000). As their popularity waned, Bad Religion left Atlantic in 2001 and returned to Epitaph. Bobby Schayer left the band following a serious shoulder injury and was replaced by Brooks Wackerman (Suicidal Tendencies) and Brett Gurewitz rejoined the band in time to record The Process of Belief (2002). The Empire Strikes First was in June 2004. Both albums are widely regarded as a return to form for the band. In 2004, the band released digitally-remastered versions of five of their early albums (How Could Hell Be Any Worse?, Suffer, No Control, Against the Grain, and Generator). The How Could Hell Be Any Worse? re-issue also contained all of their first EP, the Public Service EP (alternative versions of Bad Religion, Slaves and Drastic Actions from the self titled EP) and Back To The Known. Bad Religion's fourtheenth full-length studio album, titled New Maps Of Hell, was released on July 10, 2007. It debuted at #35 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 21,000 copies in its first week. It was originally intended to be released in 2006, but was pushed back largely due to the release of Graffin's second solo album, Cold as the Clay and Greg's work at UCLA. Brett Gurewitz, who still heads Epitaph Records, still records with the band and plays local shows. He doesn't tour with Bad Religion, however. Greg Hetson can still be found at the occasional Circle Jerks show and helped open a bar in LA. Wackerman is working on a side project called the Kidneys. Graffin spends 10 weeks a year teaching two classes (Life Sciences 1 and Earth and Space Sciences 116) at UCLA. Jay Bentley keeps the Bad Religion MySpace page updated.

Just three years ago, Lancaster, PA's August Burns Red were, to the naked eye, just another young band jockeying for position in the modern metal scene. Then came Messengers, the band's 2007 full-length release for Solid State Records, and a new front-runner emerged. Without hype, devoid of any smoke and mirrors, the album debuted at #81 on the Billboard charts, going on to ever-so-quietly sell more than 80,000 copies. Fueled only by the honesty and dynamism of the music, fans multiplied exponentially, driving ABR's MySpace plays well past the 17 million mark and flocking to the band's 2008 headlining tour – which included sold-out venues across the country. Meanwhile, August Burns Red kept their heads down, conquering fans at Warped Tour, on the Take Action tour and at destinations from Dubai to Dallas, and increased their profile through placement of their beloved take on Carol Of The Bells on the movie trailer for "The Spirit." The band also packed up their Phillies T-shirts and ever-present flip-flops and headed overseas for a tour of 12 countries throughout the UK and Europe. The star was shining bright. "It's extremely encouraging to see your band growing," says guitarist and primary songwriter JB Brubaker with characteristic modesty. "It helps keep you motivated and forces you to set the bar higher so that you can continue to grow and put out the best music you're capable of writing." To that end – the band returned to the studio in February of 2009 to record its hotly anticipated follow-up with lauded producer Jason Suecof (Sevendust, All That Remains, Trivium). Fans flocked to the band's in-studio Stickam site by the tens of thousands to observe the band recording the album in real time. The result was Constellations, the third full-length offering from August Burns Red, which was released on July 14, 2009. A crushing metal tour de force, the album pushed ABR's trademark aural blitz into directions previously unexplored by the band. "We spread our creative wings a bit on Constellations," says JB. "But I can say for sure that this record will definitely be as unrelenting as our previous ones." Accenting the blistering guitar work and syncopated breakdowns that August Burns Red fans have grown to love are dynamics previously unexplored by the band. Constellations features more diverse tempos and cohesive song compositions than on previous ABR records, as well as the band's maiden voyage to the land of guitar solos. "We've managed to push ourselves as musicians, as lyricists and performers," says drummer Matt Greiner. "As a whole, I feel like we're expanding, reinterpreting and refining our sound." That kind of sonic wanderlust has pushed August Burns Red since the members first united in March of 2003 while still in high school. They quickly started playing shows around Lancaster and in 2004, the band was signed to CI Records and released an EP called Looks Fragile After All. Armed with fearless innovation, uncanny technical ability and an innate near-classical songwriting style, the band started turning heads immediately upon the release of its 2005 Solid State debut, Thrill Seeker. The band's 2007 sleeper hit, Messengers, minted ABR as one of the pacesetters of the next generation of metal bands. The band has already proven to be the type that gets kids to put down Guitar Hero and pick up an actual guitar – look no further than the number of bands on MySpace that list ABR as an influence. With Constellations, that swelling army of fans continued to make sure that there's a racket from day one. Brubaker exclaims, "I'd like to think there is something for everyone on the new album." Although August Burns Red's music is often defined as Christian metalcore, Brubaker mentioned in an interview with Shout!, an online magazine, that "Christian is a religion, and not a style of music," and he would "rather just let the music speak for itself." However, Brent Rambler commented on the fact that "It is important to us that people know that we are indeed Christians...without having us stand up there and ram it down people's throats." One of the 2009's most anticipated metal albums, Constellations made good on the promise of the past three years, and served as proof-positive that August Burns Red's success is no mere solar flare-up. This supernova's here to stay.  Official Website: www.myspace.com/augustburnsred

Polar Bear Club is an indie rock/ hard-core band from Rochester and Syracuse, New York. A demo released in 2005 brought them much attention, and was a precursor to their first EP, The Redder, the Better, released in Summer 2006 on Triple Attack and Luchador Records. The EP contained catchy, pop-punk songs with lots of of opportunities for energetic sing-a-longs, and was found to be a fan and zine favorite throughout the year. The band's debut full-length, Sometimes Things Just Disappear was released in March 2008, also receiving glowing reviews from an even wider number of webzines and great reception from their rapidly growing fanbase. Appearances in "best of" lists followed, as well as tours with The Gaslight Anthem, American Steel, Crime in Stereo, A Wilhelm Scream and Cancer Bats, leading to the band's signing to Bridge Nine Records, officially announced on January 8, 2009. This is Hell are not going down in history for standing still. Formed on Long Island, New York in June of 2004, This is Hell made an immediate impact on the hardcore scene, and have since shown no signs of slowing down. Travis Reilly (vocals), Rick Jimenez (guitar), Chris Reynolds (guitar), Dan Bourke (drums) and Johnny Moore (bass) all cut their teeth in their local scene, but have now become road veterans with an unquenched desire to pummel stages around the world and live the lives they've built for themselves. After selling out of over 1000 self-released four song demos on early tours with Most Precious Blood, Crime In Stereo, Modern Life Is War and Terror, Run For Cover Records caught wind of the band and re-released the demo. An intense touring schedule created a massive buzz, and resulted in all pressings of the demo selling out. This is Hell were quickly becoming known as a force to be reckoned with across the globe, aided by strong support from Australian alternative radio and a month long european tour. Punknews.org praised their demo as "A dark, raucous six minutes of introvert-based hardcore" This is Hell released their long awaited debut EP on State of Mind recordings, and caught the eye of Trustkill Records in late 2005. Josh Grabelle, president of Trustkill, was blown away when he first saw them live. "Originally, I liked their work ethic, they were out there working really hard, doing things that a lot bands wouldn't do without a bigger record deal, for example touring Europe and putting an EP out. When I went to see them, I got the amazing feeling that I used to get watching hardcore bands a really long time ago, something I haven't felt in years. Travis' stage presence was amazing, and I knew they had something. I approached them pretty much out of the blue and signed them." This is Hell released their Trustkill debut, Sundowning, in May of 2006, and the buzz volume doubled. The album has received much critical acclaim in the U.S, including a profile in national punk tastemaker Alternative Press, and recent features in Kerrang, Wonkavison, and Metal Hammer. Rock Sound Magazine said of the album, "Caustic yet eloquent in their cathartic delivery, This Is Hell are a molten mix of hardcore influences that have erupted with force." Extremely popular music webzine Pastepunk.com praised the band, saying "At the core of THIS IS HELL's sound is a chewy nugget of talent and insanely tight songwriting. For a band that plays as fast and hard-hitting as they do, just as impressive is how stunningly precise every note seems to sound without ever getting the feeling that the music is rigid and lacking in emotion"

Dr. Dog has been creating music in various incarnations for a good four years now. Beginning with The Psychedelic Swamp, a concept album realized in the damp ruin of a flooded basement with waterlogged guitars and a digital delay pedal, the band has simmered on the back burner of our musical lives for most of its existence but we've recently renewed our resolve to forge ahead and give Dr. Dog the attention we think it deserves. Although Dr. Dog has as many as 20 honorary "members" who have assisted in various (mostly spiritual) capacities through the years, the core of the band consists of five musicians. Our standard instrumentation includes two guitars, bass, drums, keyboard and three part harmonies. The Beach Boys, Beatles, Tom Waits, David Bowie and Neil Young are influences, but we would be remiss in not acknowledging our debt to Pavement, Palace Brothers, R. Stevie Moore or Roy Wood. Currently, the lineup is as such: Toby Leaman on bass and singing, Scott McMicken on woof mud distortion solo guitar and voice, Andrew Jones on lean clean occasionally tremolo'd guitar, Juston Stens on trapset and harmonies and Zach Miller on keyboard(s). We've all done our share of playing. Toby and Scott have played together in a myriad of bands including Raccoon, Unleash the Bastards, and Beard; Andrew played bass in Raccoon and manages the phenomenal The Teeth; Zach has played with Bradford Trojan and Traffic Jam and studied jazz guitar; and Juston is the man behind the punk outfits It's Turbo Time and Oddnormal. We've played around Philadelphia at a good number of places, including the TLA, North Star, the Fire, Khyber, Mill Creek Tavern and Doc Watson's, the Lucky Cat and StarFoods (Brooklyn and Manhattan, respectively), Rex's (West Chester, PA),. We have accompanied My Morning Jacket on two short tours, - the second of which also featured M. Ward - who personally requested that Dr. Dog open for them. Aside from the aforementioned Swamp album - a self-produced, self-recorded low-fi four track recording - we have two other recordings. Toothbrush is a compilation of fourth generation eight-track recordings culled from the past few years. Easy Beat was recorded earlier this year and is our first proper album.

Senses Fail is a New Jersey, United States based band. They are influenced by many spiritual beliefs, which manifest themselves in their lyrics and musical themes. They released their first EP, From The Depths Of Dreams, on August 12, 2002 on ECA Records, followed by a re-release on April 29, 2003 on Drive-Thru Records. Their first proper album, Let It Enfold You, was released on September 7, 2004 on Vagrant Records. It too was re-released with five bonus tracks, including three acoustic versions of songs on Let It Enfold You. On November 13, 2007, Senses Fail released a deluxe version of Still Searching, which featured new art, behind-the-scenes DVD featuring footage from the band's headlining tour last fall, two additional previously digital-only songs, three new songs, and a cover of The Cranberries's song 'Salvation'. The band was started by James (a.k.a. Buddy) Nielsen in 2001. After Garrett Zablocki responded to an ad posted by Nielsen on an internet message board, Dave Miller and Dan Trapp found their way into the band as well. Mike Glita, the ex-bassist for Tokyo Rose, was also welcomed into the band soon afterwards. Early in 2006, Dave Miller left the band. He now manages a small, pop punk New Jersey band called Jet Lag Geminii. Currently playing guitar in his place is Heath Saraceno of Midtown. On December 8th, 2007, Senses Fail's bassist Mike Glita left the band to pursue his side project (Knights in Paris). He has announced, on myspace, that he will join the band Vampire for Hire, now known as Love Automatic, and continue to pursue the side project. Their latest album is Life Is Not A Waiting Room which was released on October 12, 2008. “There is a real sense of urgency in the songs we’ve been writing,” says singer James “Buddy” Nielsen. “We’re just now starting to find the direction for this record and you’re definitely going to hear a more aggressive side of Senses Fail. The songs have a lot of grit and power and remind me of how I felt when we wrote From The Depths of Dreams. We are all very excited to get in the studio with Brian again and make the best music we’ve ever made.”

Formed in October of 2000, Bayside consisted of four musicians looking for a chance to play music the rest of their lives. They recorded a demo and the band began playing shows around Long Island, NY. They quickly caught the eye of Brooklyn, New York's Dying Wish Records, who released their first EP, "Long Stories Short", featuring the songs "Foot Impressions", "Days Of My Life", "Red Head VS. The Pretty Red Bracelet", "Downtime", "Ask For It", and "Advance Letter Goodbye". Bayside immediately began touring with no signs of letting up. Bayside has shared the stage with acts like Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Further Seems Forever, Glasseater, The Rocking Horse Winner, The Reunion Show, and Taking Back Sunday. They've also completed an east coast stint in support of The Stryder, as well as appearing at the 2002 Skate and Surf Fest, where the bill included bands such as The Get Up Kids, Midtown, Dashboard Confessional, and Finch. During the summer of 2002, Bayside played a three-week stretch on Van's Warped Tour. In October of the same year, Bayside embarked on their first full US tour with Unsung Zeros and Junction 18. They also released a Split EP with Name Taken. The Split featured the songs "Loveless Wrists", "Cold and Blue and Lifeless", "Just Enough To Love You", and "Answers We'll Never Get". In the midst of all this touring several line up changes occurred, as the band strived to find the right mix of personalities and dedication to get them where they wanted to be. Through the many line up changes there has been two constants...singer/guitarist Anthony Raneri and lead guitarist Jack O'Shea. Former members include Andrew Elderbaum, Jason Enz, Jim Mitchell, and Gavin Miller who was used as a temporary replacement drummer for John "Beatz". Eventually Bayside found a compatible mix with the current line up: Anthony Raneri, Jack O'Shea, bassist Nick Ghanbarian, and drummer Chris Guglielmo. Also added during this time was the management of Jamie Arthurs of J&J Artist Management. During that time, they were signed to Victory Records, the label with whom they have released 4 albums. Their First album, "Sirens and Condolences", which featured the single "Masterpiece" which they filmed a music video for, and spawned a huge on-coming of fans everywhere. "Sirens and Condolences" also features: "Poison In My Veins", "Phone Call From Poland", "Talking Of Michaelangelo", "Alcohol And Alter Boys", "A Synonym For Acquiesce", "How To Fix Everything", "Kellum", "If You're Bored", "Just Enough To Love You", and "Guardrail". They then released their second full length, "Bayside", which featured the hit single "Devotion and Desire" for which they filmed a music video, and helped Bayside to justify their place as one of the best up and coming punk/alternative bands today. "Bayside" also featured: "Hello Shitty", "Tortures Of The Damned", "They Looked Like Strong Hands", "Montauk", "Blame It On Bad Luck", "We'll Be O.K.", "Existing In A Crisis (Evelyn)", "Don't Call Me Peanut", "Half A Life", and "Dear Tragedy". Then tragedy struck. On the first night of the Never Sleep Again Tour with label-mates Hawthorne Heights, Aiden, and Silverstein, the band was in a tragic van accident, which left Anthony and Jack slightly hurt, Nick seriously injured, and caused the death of John. Anthony and Jack decided to re-embark on the tour, and do the remainder of their sets acoustic. This led to the release of their 3rd full-length album, "Bayside Acoustic", in 2006, which consists of 10 tracks. A new acoustic song in memory of John "Beatz", entitled "Winter"; five acoustic versions of their older songs:"Blame It On Bad Luck","They Looked Like Strong Hands","Masterpiece", "Montauk", and "Devotion And Desire". One live track,"Don't Call Me Peanut". An all-new non-acoustic song, "Paternal Reversal".And two cover songs. One of The Smoking Popes' "Megan", and a cover of Elliott Smith's "Baby Britain". The album also includes a live DVD of the final show of the tour, at the House Of Blues in Chicago, Illinois. The band released their fourth full-length album, "The Walking Wounded" on February 6th, 2007 on Victory Records. The first single off the album is entitled "Duality", for which they have a music video. The album also features the tracks "The Walking Wounded", "They're Not Horses, They're Unicorns","Carry On", I & I", "Choice Hops and Bottled Self-Esteem", "Head On A Plate", "Dear Your Holiness", "Landing Feet First", "Thankfully","A Rite Of Passage", and "(POP)Ular SciencE". Anthony has also begun an attempt at a solo career, touring with the Bombers, and performing with Vinny Caruana of I Am The Avalanche. A solo record hasn't been verified yet. The band recently released a music video for the song "Carry On", that is exclusive to Myspace. They have also set the date for a re-release of "The Walking Wounded" due out on July 22, 2008. On September 30th, 2008, they released their 4th full-length studio album "Shudder". Also, their live CD "Bayside: Live At the Bayside Social Club" was released on the same day. It was recorded on August 17th, 2008 at S.I.R. Studios in New York, where a few lucky fans from the Bayside Social Club were given the chance to attend the private show.

A leading light in the punk-pop genre, Motion City Soundtrack includes members Joshua Cain (guitar), Tony Thaxton (drums), Justin Pierre (vocals/guitar), Jesse Johnson (Moog), and Matthew Taylor (bass). Following their high-school graduation, Minneapolis, MN natives Pierre and Cain -- both of whom were inspired by Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbox, The Flaming Lips, and Superchunk -- formed the band in 1999. The pair assembled a temporary lineup and issued a self-released 7" that same year. Later, while touring through Pennsylvania in support of their release, Motion City Soundtrack met Thaxton and Taylor of the Virginia-based band Submerge. The two musicians decided to leave their hometown of Richmond, VA, to join Motion City Soundtrack full-time, and the expanded band soon entered the studio with producer/engineer Ed Rose (The Get Up Kids, Ultimate Fakebook). Three weeks before recording commenced, they were also joined by keyboardist Jesse Johnson (whose personal record label, Ordinary Records, had issued some of Jimmy Eat World's earliest material in 1995) to relieve singer/guitarist Pierre of his synthesizer duties. With a new lineup firmly in place, the band's punk-glazed debut, I Am the Movie, was released in the summer of 2003. While playing venues and basements in support of the album, Motion City Soundtrack was picked up by Epitaph Records; later, they joined Blink-182 on a tour through Europe and Japan. Blink's bassist, Mark Hoppus, took a liking to the band and agreed to produce their next album; the resulting Commit This to Memory was released two years later and featured an increasingly pop-heavy sound. A deluxe version of the album (complete with bonus DVD) appeared in 2006, and the band spent the summer on Warped Tour before heading to Europe with Ok Go that fall. Entering the studio for the third time, Motion City Soundtrack began to work with producers Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne), Eli Janney (of Girls Against Boys), and Ric Ocasek (of The Cars).

Say Anything is an alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, United States in 2001. Originally dubbed Sayanything, the band now consists of founding members Max Bemis (vocals/guitar) and Coby Linder (drums), along with Alex Kent (bass), Jake Turner (guitar), Jeff Turner (guitar) and Parker Case (keyboard), a lineup which has remained stable since 2005. Say Anything began their career when the band was still in high school. They self-released two EP's and one LP entitled Baseball. Baseball and the band's first EP, Junior Varsity, are both out of print and are no longer available. The band's second EP entitled Menora/Mejorah was released online. All of these early albums have a pop punk sound reminiscent of Blink-182 and of Max's favorite band, Saves the Day. In August 2004 they released ...Is a Real Boy on Doghouse Records. The album was produced by Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, The All-American Rejects, Superdrag) with arrangements by Stephen Trask (Grammy nominated for Hedwig & the Angry Inch). While recording the album Max Bemis had a nervous breakdown during which he took to the streets of New York until his girlfriend found him and ended up in a mental hospital for a few weeks. He attributes the breakdown to stress and bipolar disorder. Some time after ...Is a Real Boy was released, a set of 8 songs entitled Vs. AIDS Demos were leaked onto the internet by an unknown source. Soon the band told fans that the demos were part of an AIDS benefit album that had been scrapped, and told anyone who had attained them not to distribute them to anyone else (Max Bemis later stated on his website, "that shit sucks," in regard to the demos). Say Anything signed with J Records (Maroon 5, Alicia Keys), owned by BMG Entertainment, one of the "big four" record labels. Under J Records they re-released ...Is a Real Boy with a bonus disc entitled ...Was a Real Boy containing seven of the eight Vs. AIDS Demos. This album, originally scheduled to be released on October 25th, 2005, was delayed over 4 months to February 28th, 2006. Some copies ended up leaking out through various retailers, notably Tower Records' website. Most leaks occurred due to retailers shipping pre-orders before J-Records had a chance to stop them. Soon copies of the album were selling for over $50 on eBay. Say Anything released their third album, In Defense of the Genre, under J Records in 2007. Produced by Brad Wood, the album had two discs containing 27 songs, many of them featuring guest appearances by high-profile musicians such as Gerard Way and Hayley Williams. In November 2009, Say Anything released their fourth full-length studio album, Say Anything. This is the band's first album under RCA Records. It contains 13 tracks, including "Hate Everyone," which was the album's first single.

Daybreak. It’s a fitting title for Saves The Day’s upcoming record, the third part of a trilogy that began with 2006’s Sound the Alarm and continued with Under The Boards in 2007. "Sound The Alarm is an expression of discontent. Under The Boards is reflection and remorse. Daybreak is acceptance," explains singer-guitarist and chief songwriter Chris Conley. “Daybreak wraps up all the turmoil and misery of the previous two albums and transcends the pain by facing the fear and angst that comes in this Life and turning it into growth and positive change.” Positive change makes sense for a band that has always had a penchant for evolution. After forming in Princeton, New Jersey in 1997, Saves The Day released its debut album, Can’t Slow Down, in 1998. The band followed it up with the genre-defining Through Being Cool one year later. 2001’s Stay What You Are elevated Saves The Day to an even greater level of success and critical recognition, followed soon after by 2003’s In Reverie. In Reverie took an exciting sonic leap from Stay What You Are, which itself was a stylistic departure from Through Being Cool. Each album the band has released has its own distinct style and flair, though they are all undoubtedly Saves The Day through and through. Fast-forward to 2010, and Saves The Day is evolving once again. After the departure of long time member David Soloway in 2008, along with Mannuel Cerrero and Durijah Lang in 2009 (who left the band to focus on former group Glassjaw), Saves The Day hit the road rocking all their classic tunes with a brand new look. Arun Bali, Rodrigo Palma and Spencer Peterson, now join Conley to round out the Saves The Day lineup. It is with these new members that the band will record Daybreak. As Conley explains, “it makes sense that Daybreak features a new lineup, as thematically the album deals with coming back to Life with a renewed appreciation and attitude of perseverance and acceptance.” Now, with the band ready to release the long-anticipated third part to the trilogy, you get the feeling that a new day is truly breaking for Saves The Day. “Daybreak is both an ending and a new beginning,” says Conley. “Daybreak comes back to Life to say, ‘we are here together and we can make it through.’"

Withered formed in mid 2003 by Chris Freeman and Mike Thompson (founding members of the political/crust/grind outfit, Social Infestation). Coming out of a dark period riddled with death & depression, they were driven to explore the darker attributes of life and created a torturous yet liberating form of music. they accomplished this by combining norwegian black metal anguish, early swedish death metal riffing, modern american doom, and dramatic guitar melodies all while still clinging to their punk and grind roots. to culminate this, they needed an unrelenting percussion force. they called upon long time friend and accomplished drummer, Wes Kever (ex puaka balava w/ Mike T.). after writing a few songs they realized it was time to find the bassist that could audibly obliterate their listeners. They called upon Greg Hess (ex leechmilk). His menacing sludgy background helped cultivate withered's intense sound. withered immediately started touring and stirring up a frenzy in the eastern US with a 3 song demo. Lifeforce records took notice of the bands efforts and a contract was inked in early '05. their debut album "memento mori" was released in fall 2005 and gained incredible praise throughout the world. Decibel magazine gave "Memento Mori" the 4th position in their "top 40 albums of 2005". Every song on "Memento Mori" reminds you that death is patiently awaiting your inevitable arrival and that you can either welcome it with open arms or be dragged into it kicking and screaming. Songs like "the fear and pain that cripples me" are an unrelenting force of grind and metal while the almost nine minute epic "like locusts" embraces the darkest corners of life & conciousness with lulling guitar melodies, majestic riffage, and blistering verses. 2006 was a tough year. Withered parted ways with Greg Hess and Wes Kever just after completing a successful tour supporting Vital Remains and Dismember. They had to step down due to their family obligations and inability to tour at Withered's pace. In Early '07, withered recruited Mike Longoria and Beau Brandon. Both hail from El Paso, TX (eventually moving to Atlanta) where they had known each other for decades and had played together in numerous bands (founding member's of Waited). Their history together provided the foundation for creating a formidable rhythm section. They have been able to over-fill some pretty big shoes left behind by Hess and Kever and have taken withered's music to the next level. In December '07, withered signed to Prosthetic records. their 2nd full length was immediately named “one of the top 25 most anticipated albums of 2008” by Decibel magazine. "Folie Circulaire" hit the streets on June 24th of '08 and is already gaining tremendous praise. It transcends all sub-genres of extreme music effortlessly and with unsurpassed continuity. The lyrical content and theme of the album challenges you to open your mind and consider humanity's ugly truths. It features a cover of Necrophobic's Into Armageddon and Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) makes a guest vocal appearance on two tracks.

Devin the Dude is a Houston-area rapper. Though relatively well-known among the underground hip-hop community during the mid-to-late 90's, Devin did not achieve mainstream success until his appearance on Dr. Dre's 2001album. Besides sex, relationships, ridin' trucks, smokin' reefer, drinkin' beer, partying, and conscious or proverbial themes, much of Devin's work is also light-hearted and comically self-deprecating. Copeland started out as a member of the Odd Squad, later known as the Coughee Brothaz, a group of rappers signed to Rap-A-Lot Records. The label is notable for being the home of hip-hop artists such as Geto Boys, Scarface, and Too Much Trouble. Copeland moved on to become part of Scarface's Facemob, before going solo in 1998. Copeland has released five solo albums: The Dude (1998), Just Tryin' ta Live (2002), To tha X-Treme (2004), Waitin' to Inhale (2007), and Landing Gear (2008). He also made a number of guest appearances, including on Dr. Dre's "Fuck You" in 1999, and De La Soul's "Baby Phat" in 2001. In 2008, he ended his 15 year relationship with Houston based Rap-A-Lot Records because the label failed to renew his contract. Later that year, he signed with indie label Razor & Tie. Despite being a critical success, Devin the Dude has not achieved success in the mainstream but continues to be a well-known underground hip-hop artist. The New York Times has called him "A brilliant oddball with a spaced-out flow." In addition, he has been called "Rap's best-kept secret" and "Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper." In 2007, he appeared in a documentary titled Screwed In Houston produced by VBS/Vice Magazine that details the history of the Houston rap scene.

Blonde Redhead is an alternative rock band. It was formed by Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi, and Milan-born Italian twin brothers Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace. They take their name from a song by DNA a 70s and 80s no-wave band from New York. Blonde Redhead caught the attention of Sonic Youth's drummer, Steve Shelley, who produced their first self titled album in 1993. Shortly afterwards Maki Takahashi left the band and the remaining band members continued as a trio. On their third album, Fake Can Be Just As Good, they were joined by Vern Rumsey of Unwound as a guest bassist. After this they continued without a bass player for the release of the remainder of their albums. On their fourth album, In an Expression of the Inexpressible, Guy Picciotto of Fugazi was hired as producer, as well as contributing to singing on the song "Futurism vs. Passeism Part 2". Guy Picciotto has produced their latest two records as well, Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery is a Butterfly. Blonde Redhead has gradually increased in popularity in the underground music scene. Their early music has been described as emulative of Sonic Youth, but their more recent releases have begun to stray from this generalization. Kazu Makino is noted for her high, eerie voice, which hovers over melodic guitar riffs and rhythmic drum beats. The large span of time between Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons and Misery is a Butterfly is attributed to Makino's recovery time after being trampled by a horse. Much of Misery Is A Butterfly's imagery and illustration is equestrian or reflective of the accident. In the liner notes, Makino thanks her doctors "and her friends who fed her and cheered her up when she couldn't do much on her own." http://blonde-redhead.com/
